Violent Dreams and Fish Oil

Omega 3 and violent dreams

Omega 3 and violent dreams

Hi, I've taken fish oil supplement for about a week now. I've been having very violent dreams the last two nights. I do have violent dreams, but have not had any for a while. Could this be my body adjusting to the fish oil?

Thanks.

Answer:

Hi, I have never heard of violent dreams as a consequence of taking fish oil. I am placing the question here so some other people can tell if they ever had a similar experience.

I guess violent dream could be similar to headaches or insomnia, if you have a tendency many things could produce them. So, I don´t rule it out, it could be the brand of fish oil you are taking. Next time, I would recommend buying a molecularly distilled fish oil that is more pure and have almost zero contaminants, please check our Omega 3 Store.

Best regards,

Alfredo E.
P.S. Don’t forget your daily omega 3 for your entire family. You can find omega 3 in Cod Liver Oil, Krill Oil and Fish Oil,molecularly distilled, free of impurities sent anywhere in the world at low reasonable price, Omega 3 Store

Fish oil and ASESOME dreams
by: Jeff Steel

I never really had dreams before I started taking the fish pills with omega 3 from Target... But WOW it is like watching a movie all night.. Nothing bad only intense action dreams.. I think it is kind of awesome as I also wake up and remember everything..

They are so detailed and I know most everyone/places in the dreams. Some of the places I have been to but my dreams/mind have made it like 10 times more detailed and so many awesome things added to every place I dream about!! I do think it is effecting my sleep a little as I seem to be more tired in the morning and it is a little harder to get out of bed...

I have only been taking it for a couple weeks but lets see if it will calm down after a month..

Dreams & Blood Pressure
by: Anonymous

I love taking these fish oil capsules, but after having a few months break from the first batch, I’ve noticed a few days after taking them, that I find sleep hard, and dream like crazy.

The upside to them is their ability to make my mental clarity clear, but they also lower my blood pressure... which is bad, as my blood pressure is very low anyway, and it's not making me feel that great to be frank.

Vivid nightmares
by: Diane

It took me a while to figure out what was causing these nightmares, so "waiting it out" didn't work for me - probably took about 2 months for me stop taking them.

I've tried different doses, different brands, flax seed instead of fish based, only twice a week. They return every time - and I took them in the morning, so plenty of time before I went to bed.

I'm sad since I'd like the benefits, but not worth waking up freaked out every morning and not getting a good night's sleep!

Fish Oil Capsules - any Capsules
by: Anonymous

I too had all the very bizarrest of dreams on fish oil capsules, almost every symptom mentioned here, the worst being when waking up in the night I would see horrible, bizarre, weird people, animals, whatever, and they didn't scare me but I would blink and they would still be there for a few seconds!

I researched and talked to my doctor. She said I only need to eat fish twice a week to get enough fish oil. On my own, I read a lot and found that capsules have some kind of "something" in them that can cause dreams/hallucinations/nightmares, etc.! I quit any capsule and so did the dreams - immediately!! It didn't matter morning or night for me. BUT, recently I decided to take Vitamin B-12 and just grabbed capsules without thinking. It was the second night and the dreams started again! May not bother some, but they don't work for me. Never again. Hope this helps...

Some poeple get happy or bad dreams on there first week of fish oil.

I too have nightmares
by: Anonymous

I started taking fish oil about a week ago, and for the last two nights I have had vivid nightmares. I am glad to see that I am not the only one - and even more glad to see that it seems to subside after a bit of adjustment. I hope this adjustment happens sooner rather than later!

Fishy Dreams
by: Anonymous

I just bought some fish oil pills last week. Have not used till now though. If fish oils do result in vivid and bizarre dreams, then they would be a nice aid in the induction of lucid dreams.

Imagine a virtual world inside your head, where you control almost everything.

Fish Oil Caplets
by: Anonymous

I quit taking fish oil after basically hallucinating every night! I have been told that there is something in the capsule that does this! Are all of you taking caplets or are there tablets.
I know I haven't had a nightmare or hallucination since quitting about a month ago. Curious to see if everyone having a problem is on a caplet...

Answer:

Have you tried liquid fish oil?

Mental help
by: Anonymous

I started taking omega 3 supplements about a week ago in response to some blood tests and have been dreaming every night but not necessarily nightmares.

I hardly had dreams before taking omega 3 and i think its actually helping mentally.

Fish Oil and Hallucinations
by: Anonymous

I started having more of a vivid hallucination than dreams just when waking up in the night, not a.m. Just a brief site of someone/thing.

Doesn't scare me but I am shocked. I stopped Fish Oil and they stopped so far. I wondered about caplets also.

I started taking cod liver oil capsules just over 1 week ago, since then having very vivid dreams all night long. Feel like I am not getting any proper sleep.

Before taking this supplement I only had dreams occasionally.

Horrible, Violent Dreams and Fish Oil
by: Anonymous

Like other people said on this web page, I am glad I found out that I am not alone with the bad dreams. My dreams are violent, bloody, horrible things to animals and people.

I wake up with my heart pounding so hard I feel like I will have a heart attack or stroke. The good news with fish oil is it helped lower my blood pressure, but I will look forward to the dreams subsiding. They are really horrible.

Strange
by: Mr. Champagne

I too take krill oil and have strange dreams, sometimes I take them late at night to have these dreams (kinda fun) I noticed that if you have a higher fat dinner ie. ribeye and lobster the dreams are way more intense. And why are more often then not they contain violence I'm not a violent guy

terrible nightmares
by: sjupie

I'm so glad I found this forum. I've started taking Lovaza (pharmaceutical grade fish oil) for a few days. Since I've been taking it, I've had vivid nightmares about falling out of a plane to my death.

They start as I'm drifting off to sleep and jar me awake, terrified. Last night was the worst. This happened about one hundred times until I finally fell asleep at 5 a.m. I cried trying to explain the real terror I felt to my husband. I skipped the capsules tonight, but I'm afraid to go to sleep.

Dream all night long!
by: Billye

I have been taking 3 fish oil soft gels as soon as I wake up in the morning for 3 months now. I haven't had violent dreams but from the minute I close my eyes to when I wake up I am having weird dreams and it seems to be a very "light" sleep.

I know during REM sleep your heart beats faster and your blood pressure increases which is a concern as I have high blood pressure. Plus, in the morning I feel exhausted and I get tired much earlier in the evening than before I was taking fish oil. I used to sleep like a rock before I started taking fish oil. How long will it be before my body adjusts? I have no fish allergies. HELP!!!

Fish Oil and Dreams
by: Nikki

I just started taking fish oil about 5 days ago and have had strange dreams as well. The dreams are very vivid and life-like. I have never experienced anything like this before, which led me to surf the internet for any correlation between the omega 3 and the vivid dreams.

I decided to take the supplements earlier in the day yesterday to see if that would help. I still had a few weird dreams, but it was not as intense as the previous nights. I will continue to take my supplements and I have read that the dreams will diminish with time.

Bad Dreams
by: Anonymous

Me and my boyfriend have been taking Fish Oil capsules for a week now and we are both having bad dreams. Was wondering if fish oil causes bad dreams so I am online researching. It looks like it does go away though. But I know something had to cause these dreams. Weird : )

Vivid Dreams....
by: CK

Yep - same vivid dreams. Not nightmares, really, just vivid lifelike dreams.

On the other hand flax oil 100% took care of my anxiety problem....

Dream Occurance Length
by: Anonymous

The dreams subsided after a couple of weeks for me. I have been taking omega 3's for 9 weeks now and haven't had the dreams since around week 2.

fish oil
by: GlassWrapper

I have been tired because of so much dreaming at nite. I feel like I have been involved in too much activity at nite. Running, chasing, jumping, building etc. I am exausted when I get up. I started fish oil a week ago. Plus my eyes twitch and I have blurry vision.

This discussion makes me sure that the fish oil is the cause. thanks..

Weird dreams
by: Anonymous

I have been taking Omega 3-6-9 supplements for about a week and have been having strange nightmares the last couple nights, too. I'm going to continue taking them and hope the nightmares eventually stop. Has anyone had any experience with the dreams going away after some time, and if so, after how long?

From The EditorPlease, do NOT take omega 3 6 9. Take only omega 3. To know the reasons, please read Omega 3 6 9

Same issue with flaxseed oil
by: Anonymous

I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this weird effect. Although I am not having nightmares, I have several dreams a night and wake up often. Very odd.

Violent nightmares
by: Anonymous

I too started fish oil caplets a week ago and every night since i have had violent nightmares.. I don't wake up scared which is strange but i wake up shocked at how violent the dream was.

I take them in the morning also so plenty of time before bedtime.

How strange, i too have disturbed and vivid dreams for last 2weeks (taking fish oil also for last two weeks)..Good to know it will settle as I?m sharper in the day, just not switching off at night.:/

Me too: I just googled fish oil and nightmares
by: Anonymous

I have crohn's disease and have been taking fish oil to self medicate and I've just started feeling restless at night and last night I had the most vivid nightmare. It was really scary and disturbing... I normally dream but I never usually wake up from my dreams scared and terrified.

I wonder if there is a property in fish oil that is in the fish to keep them alert when they are sleeping?? ?

Me too
by: Michael

I have had the same experience with nightmares and disturbing dreams as soon as I start taking fish oil. I wake up feeling tired from poor sleep. There is a direct correlation for sure. Glad to know i'm not the only one. But I'd still like to know why?.

From the editor. Maybe you could try taking your fish oil in the morning to see if anything changes.

Fish oil and nightmares
by: Anonymous

Started having nightmares as soon as I started taking fish oil a month ago. Dosage: EPA 720mg, DPA 500mg 3 x daily.

Side Effect - Vivid violent nighmares
by: Anonymous

Just an FYI - A 2400 mg /day dose will cause me to have vivid and violent nightmares. I feel more exhausted upon waking after eight hours of sleep than when I went to bed. No other changes in life or diet so I am positive the fish oil is the cause.

Disturbing nightmares
by: Anonymous

I just started taking fish oil 3 days ago and started having really bad nightmares. I don't normally dream or have nightmares. The dreams have been very violent and I wake up from my sleep remembering every disturbing detail. If this continues I will have to stop taking them.

Answer:

They will go away after a short period. Stay put.

many dreams and bad dreams
by: Betty

I have just recently started taking extra Fish Oil (per my doctor) to help my triglycerides. I have the weirdest dreams almost every night. It is like I am sleeping awake. I don't know how else to describe it.

Some dreams are very bad and disturbing and some are the kind of dreams that when I do wake, my first thought is where in the world did that dream come from???

Needless to say, I am not sleeping well and do not feel restless. I would like to know if this stems from the extra Fish Oil??????

Answer:

It has been reported in some other forum, bad dreams and even insomnia when starting fish oil supplements. Nevertheless, after a period of accommodation all things came back to normal.

Fish oil and Bad Dreams
by: Anonymous

I have been taking fish oil softgels for a WEEK now and I have been having the WORST dreams at night!

I am NOT the type of person who has dreams this often and I rarely have dreams that I can actually remember. These dreams have been VERY vivid. I am almost CERTAIN that my dreams are related to the softgels.

Man this has been a very strange week of sleep for me! Yet there is absolutely no information on the web regarding this.

Omega 3 makes me dream a lot more
by: Paul

When ever I have started to have linseed oil before bed I have a lot more vivid dreams, sometimes scary sometimes not. I am going to make more of a habit to have more regularly. Having dreams makes me more relaxed and happy the next day.

Vivid Dreams after taking Omega 3
by: roy-g

Last night I took an Omega 3 pill before I slept and have had vivid dreams of my childhood. They were all happy memories of myself and my brother; interesting to note is that the memories were in chronological order, starting from when I was around 3 years old (yes i do remember a few things) to 5, 7 years of age...

They were kind of memories with a little twist to them; since in the dream I (as a by-stander) was watching myself and my brother ride the bicycle together, swimming and playing in the pool, etc... Any medical thoughts on this? Maybe I have experienced near-death !!

Answer When you are taking a supplement, in order to get the desired benefits, you need to take certain amounts at a certain frequency. The minimum omega 3 dosage we recommend is 900 mg of omega 3 fats (EPA plus DHA, from the label), equivalent to close to 3.000 mg per day of fish oil. I you are overweight or have any degenerative disease like hypertension, high triglycerides, diabetes, arthritis, etc, you should start with 6.000 mg of fish oil per day.
