Tendon Problems and Fish OIl

by Craig Willms
(Minnesota USA)

Hi. Started taking Fish Oil on my doctor's recommendation and soon developed painful tendinitis in my left arm.

Until I started having pain in the opposite wrist did I started to wonder what had changed in my activity or diet. I play guitar every day and the pain was in the very tendons that attach to the fingers of the left hand - the pain was becoming excruciating.

The pain was migrating to the left shoulder. The pain in the right wrist was right where I do my other most common activity - mouse clicking at work. Eventually I decided the only thing that had changed was introducing fish oil into my diet.

I stopped taking fish oil 5 days ago and the pain is quickly going away in all areas. I have seen no where tendon problems associated with fish oil, it makes no sense, but my experience is unquestionable - cause/effect.

Thanks

Answer:

Keep in mind the multiple benefits before you decide to avoid it. One of the major benefits is its capacity to reduce inflammation in ALL body cells, including tendons.

I am not in a position to argue with your personal experience but I doubt omega 3 fast can produce more inflammation. If I were in your situation, I would do 2 things: first, restart taking your fish oil at 3.000 mg per day, for a week or two. See if the pains come back. If pain comes back I would suggest changing to molecularly distilled quality fish oil, like the one we sell here. Maybe you are reacting to any one of the components or impurities in your omega 3.
My best wishes,

Alfredo E.

Also had fish oil/tendinitis prolem
by: David

My story exactly mirrors that of Steve's. I too developed "tennis elbow" days after beginning a fish oil regimen. I know it shouldn't happen because fish oil is an anti-inflammatory agent, but such a direct cause and effect relationship cannot be discounted.

Could it be the enteric coating on the fish oil pills I'm using have more to do with the tendinitis that the fish oil itself? I plan on trying a different kind without the coating to see.

In the meantime I'm going to do tendinitis exercises to manage the problem.

Tendon problems

I was taking Lovaza (highly refined fish oil) and I noticed that my pain in forearms seemed to be getting worse, even when not lifting a lot at work. One night, both feet swelled up and could hardly walk. I read side affects of medicine and sore muscles was on there. I quit taking and pain stopped weeks later.

Just to prove my own theory to myself, I started taking Omega 3-6-9 tablets that seem to be working for my ADHD son. The pain came back and both feet swelled up in 2 days of starting back up. Right now I am trying an enteric coated fish oil with less mg. Just started this morning. I will post progress.

Answer:

Hi Steve. Lovanza is a more concentrated omega 3 product that has close to 800 mg of omega 3 fats per capsule (450 EPA plus 350 mg of DHA). Usually, fish oil capsules have close to 300 mg of omega 3 fats (180 EPA plus 120 DHA). You don?t mention how much Lovanza were taking but it should not be the cause of inflammation since it is well known for its anti inflammatory properties.

Be careful, when you say that you proved your theory by taking an omega 3,6,9 you may be taking a different product. Omega 6 is a pro inflammatory oil that neither you or your son should be taking( it won?t help with ADHD). You or your son should only take omega 3, not with omega 6 or 9.

Your original inflammation could be caused by some other agent different than the omega 3. It could be a good idea to change the omega 3 brand name and see if you get a different result. Take at least 1.800 mg per day of omega 3 fats (3.000 mg of commercial fish oil)

Good luck.

Alfredo E
