Are Smoked Salmon High in Omega-3?
Question:
Is smoked salmon high in omega-3?
By Vincent M
Answer:
Polyunsaturated oils, including the omega 3 fats, are extremely susceptible to damage from heat, light, and oxygen. When exposed to these elements for too long, the fatty acids in the oil become oxidized, that is rancid.
Rancidity not only alters the flavor and smell of the oil, but it also diminishes the nutritional value. More importantly, the oxidation of fatty acids produces free radicals, which are believed to play a role in the development of cancer and other degenerative diseases.
As a result, oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids should be stored in dark glass, tightly closed containers in the refrigerator or freezer.
In addition, these oils should never be heated on the stove. So, instead of sautéing your vegetables in flaxseed or walnut oil, make a salad dressing using these oils.
When purchasing an omega 3 fatty acid supplement, remember that these oils are highly sensitive to damage from heat, light and oxygen.
Choose a certified organic product that has been refrigerated and is packaged in a dark brown or green glass jar and be sure to store the product in your refrigerator or freezer.
When you think of how to increase your omega 3 intake, you have the possibility to do it by eating fatty fish or taking a fish oil supplement. Depending on their stage of life, consumers need to be aware of both the benefits and risks of eating fish.
Children, pregnant and nursing women are at increased risk of exposure to excessive mercury from fish. Avoiding potentially contaminated fish is a higher priority for these groups
Smoked salmon is not they same as salmon, raw salmon. This last one has a high omega 3 content if you eat it raw or after low heat. But omega 3 fatty acids are fats that oxidize VERY easy, in a few hours if you let it at room temperature or in minutes, if you cook it at high temperatures.
Whatever omega 3 had the salmon gets rancid with the time and temperatures exposure when smoked.
This may not be the healthiest choice since smoked salmon has a lot of chemicals added in the manufacturing process. Try to get your omega 3 the safest way: taking omega 3 supplements that are normally very low in contaminants, specially when it is molecularly destilled.
