omega 3 for hair, skin and nails

omega 3 for hair, skin and nails

I understand that fish oil is good for heart disease, inflammation and depression but I am more interested in the benefits it can have on my skin and nails. I’ve just started taking them in gel capsules, in hope that it will help my eczema/dry skin/dinted nails.

Martha

Answer:

Martha: one of the first symptoms you get when you have a low omega 3 diet is in your skin, hair and nails. They look dull and grow slowly.

How do you know whether you suffer from a fatty-acid imbalance? A good way to tell whether you have an imbalance is to look at your hair and skin.

If your skin is scaly or dry, if you have brittle or soft nails or if you have unmanageable hair, then you just may have a fatty-acid imbalance, or better an omega 3 deficiency. Who would think that a deficiency of Omega 3 fatty acids could be the cause of bad-hair days?

There are other indicators. We should look for such as excessive thirst, poor healing of wounds, irritability, fatigue or weakness, frequent infections, dry eyes and hyperactivity.

The majority of people can probably relate to having soft nails, dry skins, and those all too often bad-hair days!

Most good hairdressers understand that poor nutrition can cause your hair to be dull and lifeless, and it may even affect the growth of your hair. Thus, it makes sense that a good diet can improve your hair’s quality.

The same often happens with pets, their hair is an easy to see signal that they need a change in food (read my pages on pet food and omega 3 for dogs )

Omega 3 fatty acids are vital to healthy hair. When the body is starved of essential nutrients suck as the Omega 3 fatty acids, the hair can become dull and unhealthy. It is a well-known fact that Omega 3 fatty acids contain hair-growing properties.

There are three main nutrients found in Omega 3: Alpha Linolenic Acid, or ALA, Eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, and Docosahexaenioc acid or DHA. In addition to the sources mentioned above, you can find high amounts of Omega 3 in halibut, albacore, herring, canola oil, clams, sardines, trout, walnut and shrimp.

Fish Oil and Hair Nutrient for Hair Loss

    by Prameela
    (Singapore)

    Dear sir/mdm,

I am currently suffering from hairloss and have been taking Shen Min Hair Nutrint capsules daily . These are meant to reduce hairfall. I am also taking fish oil capsule (1) daily. Are there any problems if these are taken together? can it induce more hairfall?

    Thank you.
    Prameela

    Answer:

Hi Prameela. Every time that anybody asks me if they can take omega 3 with this or with that, I like to repeat that they should remember that omega 3 fatty acids are defined in nutrition as ESSETIAL FATTY ACIDS. That mean they are essential for our body to keep its health, and since it can not produce its own omega 3 we have to supply it in our nourishment.

The reason we have to take a supplement of omega 3 is that modern diets( lots of grains and sugars) have 20 to 50 times less omega 3 that what we need in order to avoid accelerated aging a nd a host of degenerative diseases.

If you are taking one capsule a day, it looks as too low a dosage. The minimum I recommend is 900 mg od omega 3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA( close to 3.000 mg of fish oil).

Now, regarding hair loss, omega 3 is know for helping hair, skin and nails to grow faster and stronger. You can read more at Omega 3 and Your Hair.

I have no idea what your Hair Nutrient can do for you but would encourage you to see your hair’s health as a reflection of your overall health.

Try to have a low omga 6 high omega 3 diet following the ideas you can find here and complement that doing 30 minutes a day of high intensity exercise. Do that for a month and you will feel like a new person

    My best to you,

    Alfredo E.

Dry Eyes, Dry lips and Fish Oil

    Omega 3 and dry eyes

    Omega 3 and dry eyes

Hi. I have had dry eyes and dry lips for four years, and used every eye drop on the market. A Naturopath suggested I take 3 fish oil capsules a day, and maybe up to 5 later.

Some experiments were being conducted on mature age women, and it was found to help 75% of cases. It is too early to tell if it is doing me any good, does anyone else have this problem, and how they are treating it.
    Thanks,
    Pat

    Answer:

Hello Pat, I believe your naturopath is correct when he recommended fish oil for your dry eyes. I have no experience with dry lips but you can tell us after a few weeks.

Again, the fish oil dosage is 3.000 mg of fish oil for a person in his/her ideal weight, if you are overweight or have any degenerative disease like hypertension, diabetes, etc, or have a diet consuming lots of starchy foods, it may take some more omega 3 to get good results.

I personally know a friend who had dry eyes syndrome for years and started to take fish oil for other reasons but her problem was gone after a few weeks. In the literature you can also find information about fish oil working to improve this condition.

Let us know what your results are.

    Please, read Fish Oil Benefits

    Best regards,

    Alfredo E.
