Running, Joint Inflammation and Omega 3
Question:
Joint Inflammation - I have always enjoyed incorporating running as a part of my regimen for many years in addition to playing soccer. However, I have always had to struggle with combating shin splints.
"exercise and omega 3 are anti inflammatory agents"
Stretching properly and a good pair of running shoes help tremendously, but now I find my knees beginning to ache. I know that the bones and legs aren't the same as when I was 20, but has anyone else experienced similar challenges?
Thanks,
By John
Answer:
What your legs and knees are telling you is that they are overworked. If you have sheen splints you are not doing compensation exercises. You see, running is the endless repetition of the same movements.
That creates a muscle imbalance that have to be compensated with additional exercises. By doing some compensatory exercises(the magic five, as these five exercises were called by Dr. George Sheehan, “The philosopher of running”).
Using ice after every run, doing some other exercises like biking in between. Everything to bring balance back to your legs.
I just have one more approach: DIET.
One of the things that creates inflammation in all parts, or cells, of the body are omega 6 fatty acids. If you have the ideal 1/1 ratio omega 6/omega 3, you have balance. The ideal situation.
All body cells have a membrane. Each membrane is mainly made of essential fats, or essential fatty acids, Omega 6 and Omega 3. If the membrane has too much Omega 6 it becomes hard, viscous and there are problems for the food, energy and hormone transfer.
When Omega 3 is sufficient the membrane is thinner, less viscous, more elastic, less inflamed. Too much 3 Omega and the membrane “drips”.
Too much Omega 6 and is clogged. It has been established that the appropriate Omega 6/Omega 3 ratio is near 1:1. In our modern life this ratio has changed to around 20:1, and some times up to 50:1. We eat too much Omega 6.
Too much Omega 6 and our cellular membranes are heavy, inelastic and the cellular function is slow. The body must do more work to feed itself and to remove toxins. Tissues are plugged up and they become inflamed.
Inflammation is the main symptom of many diseases, from heart disease , arthritis, allergies and the list goes on and on.
Omega 3 deficiency is also related to diseases like diabetes and thyroid dysfunction. If your membranes are slow, your body must produce more insulin to be able to put sugars into cells to produce energy.
Then, you become more insulin resistant. If your pancreas is inflamed it will be more difficult to produce the insulin your body is demanding.
Basically, all western diets are high in omega 6 foods, 20 to 50 times more than what is optimal. What you need to do is to increase your consumption of omega 3. The best and cheapest way to do this is to take omega 3 supplements and to decrease omega 6 vegetable oils and sugars.
