Question:

Kids Add - Could you please refer me to the recommended dosage for ADD kids? My son is 5 years old, 20 kg weight. Thanks in advance. By Elena

"ADD requires high omega 3 dosages"

Answer:

Hi Elena: Sorry for the delay answering your question.

For a long time a close relationship have been established between ADHD and Fish Oil. Omega 3 fish oil is one of the main components of brain matter. Close to 60% of the brain´s weight is fat. Fat is as important to brain as calcium is to bones: it is the raw material. If you have a low quality fat in your brain your brain cells connections won’t be optimal.

These is why it is extremely important that the pregnant and lactating women have a diet high in omega 3 fish oils and low in omega 6 and Trans Fats. Up to 40% of that fat in your brain is DHA, one of the main components of Omega 3 fish oils. That is why is relevant to have a diet high in Omega 3.

Study after study have proved that ADHD and Fish oil are intimately related. Sure, omega 3 won’t cure ADHD but will optimize to its maximum potential whatever qualities a person has. That is the important point.

Omega 3 is an ESSENTIAL fat meaning our organism needs it to function properly. More than that, our body needs a balance in the omega 6 / omega 3 ratio close to 1/1.

With our western diets we usually have a 20/1 ratio. I recommend that you try to cut the omega 6 you feed your child and provide a good amount of omega 3.

A lot of the fat found in brain is in the cell membranes of the neurons and in the protective myelin sheath that covers them. The types and proportions of fats in the cell membranes determine how effectively the brain cells communicate.

If an adult is deficient in the right fats, his brain does not function optimally, and if a child is deficient, the brain does not develop nor function optimally.

Imagine a child learning math. The act of learning makes the brain to form new neural connections. DHA is needed, especially for the delicate neural synapses which are composed entirely of DHA.

This child, like the vast majority of U.S. children, eats almost no Omega-3 fatty acids. What does the brain do? Again, it struggles and finally uses other types of fats, which are the wrong shape: Trans Fats or omega 6.

Low levels of DHA have been associated with depression, memory loss, dementia, and visual problems. DHA is particularly important for fetuses and infants; the DHA content of the infant's brain triples during the first three months of life.

Optimal levels of DHA are therefore crucial for pregnant and lactating mothers. Unfortunately, the average DHA content of breast milk in the United States is the lowest in the world, most likely because Americans eat comparatively little fish.

Low DHA levels have been linked to low brain serotonin levels which again are connected to a tendency to depression, suicide, and violence. This is how Omega 3 fatty acids and children ´s behavior are understood.

Fish Oil and ADHD

Regarding the dosage I would say, you can give him 1 gram of fish oil( 180 mgrs of EPA and 120 mgrs of DHA) to start. If this dosage doesn´t brings good results, increase it by one grams until he improves (it is easier for a child to take it in fluid form, that is more concentrated, than swallow many capsules). Note: ADD requires high dosages to get some results.

Remember to provide many hours of physical activity and very few TV time, he needs that.

Good luck.
