Osteoarthritis and Fish OIl

by Brenda Wilkinson
(London)

Hello. I have been taking a supplement for about 7 years to help with osteoarthritis. It definitely peps me up, but also I have developed a sinus tachycardia for which I am to start taking beta blockers.

I have halved the supplement dose but feel lethargic, despondent and tired. Could the omega 3 be responsible for the tachycardia? The knees are better but I have always found it difficult to relax.

Thanks.

Answer:

Hi Brenda. One of the main benefits of fish oil is that it helps lower the possibility of sudden death. When the heart experiments sudden changes in rhythm it could enter a tachycardia called fibrillation which is very dangerous for the patient. Sudden death occurs in these occasions but fish oil is one the best tools we have to protect against it.

Your feeling of fatigue and tiredness could be very well a side effect of the beta blockers which often produce this type of consequences. It is possible that the dosage of beta blocker is too high. You should ask your medical doctor about the tachycardia and the lethargy.

In order to receive the benefits of fish oil, remember to take at least 900 mg of omega 3 fats (EPA plus DHA from the label), which is equivalent to about 3.000 mg of fish oil per day. Try to lower your ingestion of starches and processed foods, they are all pro inflammatory and will not help with your arthritis, replace them with vegetables, fruits, meats, eggs, cheese, etc.

All the best.

Alfredo E.
