Dog Health Problems: Omega 3 For My Old Dog?
Question:
Dog Health Problems: My little female dog is 13 years old and her legs have started to fail her, can I give her the same fish oil I take?. In less quantity?.
Thanks. Martha.
Answer:
Dry pet food manufacturers claim everything our animals need is inside that attractive bag with their beautiful pictures of meats, vegetables and fruits, labeled "natural!" This would be great, but it's impossible to make such claims.
No matter how good the ingredients are in a bag of dog or cat food, it is still a highly processed, grain-based food, lacking in live and whole nutrients. Just a big bag of dead omega 6 fatty acids.
Manufactured dry dog foods do not provide the nutrients our dogs need and thus cause malnutrition; commercial foods also contain toxins that are over-burdening their bodies and compromising their immune systems so they fall prey to disease.
I don´t recommend flax seeds. Many dogs can not convert it to EPA and DHA and it would have to be milled on the spot to avoid oxidation, which makes it useless.
Many supplements contain Omega 3 and Omega 6. By now you know that most pet food contains more that needed omega 6, so if you add more with the supplement, you are not helping your dog.
Off course, your dog needs a lot of omega 3, as much as humans, specially in their infancy and old age. It is important that you give her one omega 3 capsule per day and that you change her diet from that terrible dry food for dogs.
What if you had to eat that dry food instead of your natural carnivorous diet?. That is the diet your dog needs at any age, a carnivorous diet. You can also give her something very healthy one egg a day.
