Omega 3 For Dog With Renal Failure

by Cindy
(Ft. Worth, TX)

Hi. My shitzhu was recently diagnosed with chronic renal failure. He refused to eat the prescribed food, so I went on line to find the raw food diet.

Several articles tell me to use fish oil. He weighs 19 lbs. I have Omega 3 Fish oil 1000 mg with 300 mg active epa/dha.

Can he take this or should I get a different dose? He is not himself and I want to help all I can. Please advise me. I love my dog.

Answer:

Cindy, you may be surprised how your dog could react to a raw food diet supplemented with adequate amounts of fish oil. I suggest you give your dog lots of raw meat and bones, find the raw organs he likes best. Probably kidneys will do find, they are rich in all nutrients a dog needs.

Regarding the fish oil dosage, there is not a fixed amount. It depends on the diet (dry food diets, rich in omega 6 need more omega 3 fish oil because omega 6 counterbalance omega 3), health, weight and age.

I would suggest 2x1.000 mg fish oil capsules per day since your dog has a degenerative disease. Wait a few weeks and if you don´t see any reaction, add another fish oil capsule.

Let us know what happens with your dog.

Best wishes,
Alfredo E.
