The fish oil dosage can be expressed in terms of omega 3 fatty acids dosage. You just have to remember that the EPA and DHA, that is the omega 3 fatty acids, are the main active components of fish oil.

Usually, a fish oil supplement or fish oil pill, has 1 gram of fish oil. In that fish oil capsule there are 180 mgrs of EPA and 120 mgrs of DHA. That is a total of 300 mgrs of omega 3 fatty acids. So, one fish oil capsule or pill is composed of 30% omega 3 fatty acids.

Some fish oil supplements have different omega 3 fatty acids content. If you buy liquid fish oil it usually has about 800 mgrs of fatty acids per teaspoon. You have to pay attention to these numbers when you buy it, keep this in mind to avoid confusion.

Many fish oil supplements come with omega 6 and omega 3, together. Avoid these since you already have too much omega 6.

The AHA urges Americans without heart disease, to eat fatty fish at least twice a week. Patients with coronary heart disease to take about 3 grams of fish oil daily, and patients with high triglycerides 6-12 grams of Fish Oil. They don´t say a word about avoiding omega 6.

For children up to 9 years of age, 1.000 mg of fish oil per day (300 mg of EPA plus DHA). For children from 9 to 16 years of age, please take 2.000 mg of fish oil per day, that is equivalent to 600 mg of omega 3 fats (EPA plus DHA, from the label). Children older than 16 years, the can take adult dosage if not overweight.

If you are heavy, start with 6 grams a day of fish oil.

If you are treating a health condition, like hypertension, high triglycerides, diabetes, etc., you can begin with 6 grams /day and see the results. That is the case with high triglycerides, they react to doses, so you would need a blood test after 4 weeks.

f you want to be more technical there is a blood test, Araquidonic Acid/Eicosapentaenoic acid, AA/EPA, that can give you a more exact measurement.

It should be between 1.5 to 3 for your omega 6 and omega 3 to be balanced.

There is also the triglycerides/ HDL cholesterol test, that can give you an indirect measurement of your Omega 6 to 3 ratio. It should be close to 1.
