Hi. I have recently recovered from a dvt and been diagnosed with emphysema (not a good year). Anyway, I’m taking 3 grams of omega 3, as well as 3 grams of vitamin C, is that too much?

Answer:
Gary, I believe when you say you are taking 3 grams of omega 3, you mean 3.000 mg of fish oil, not omega 3 fats (EPA plus DHA, from the label). If you are taking 3.000 mg of fish oil, close to 900 mg of omega 3 fats, your dosage is on the conservative side but if you are taking 3.000 mg per day of omega 3 fats, equivalent to 9.000 mg of fish oil, you are more on the high dosage side.
Nevertheless, both dosages are acceptable. It dependents if you have some other disorders like excess weight, high cholesterol or triglycerides, arthritis, or any of the disorder that come from chronic inflammation. I you also have any inflammation disorder, I would say you need at least 6.000 mg of fish oil per day.
It also depends on your diet. If you are eating processed foods, grains, starches, sugars and other pro-inflammatory foods, you need the 9 grams per day of fish oil but if you are eating fruits, vegetables, grass fed meats, no processed foods, you probably are going to need less omega 3. What omega 3 and vitamin C can do for you is to strengthen you immune system so you can avoid lung infections. All grains (sugars) weaken your immune system making you prone to attacks on your lungs. By the way, my mother suffered emphysema and I know what a lung infection means for a person with breathing difficulties.
Exercise is VERY important toll for you emphysematic problem, even though exercise is the last word a person with emphysema wants to hear. Whatever lung capacity you are left with, you can improve it by 30-40% if you exercise 4 times a week. Not only your lungs and heart get more efficient but all your cells improve the way they extract oxygen from blood. Please, do not overlook this important aspect of your life.
