Omega 3 Eggs and Cholesterol

omega 3 eggs and cholesterol

Question:

Eggs and Cholesterol:I usually eat eggs for breakfast before work, and sometimes also grab one hardboiled for a snack. I recently realized the amount of cholesterol in 4 eggs is enormous, and my question is, is it ok to eat 2-4 eggs everyday, or should I try and limit them throughout the week?

I have been taking 2-4g fish oil/day for 2 years, and was also pondering if this may help alleviate some of the negative effects of cholesterol? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Answer:

You do need cholesterol. This soft, waxy substance is found not only in your bloodstream, but also in every cell in your body, where it helps to produce cell membranes, hormones, vitamin D and bile acids that help you to digest fat. Cholesterol also helps in the formation of your memories and is vital for neurological function. Your liver makes about 75 percent of your body’s cholesterol.

The American Heart Association recommends that your total cholesterol is less than 200 mg/dL, but what they do not tell you is that total cholesterol level is just about worthless in determining your risk for heart disease, unless it is above 300. A number of people with levels over 250 who actually are at low heart disease risk due to their HDL levels. Conversely, I have seen even more who had cholesterol levels under 200 that were at a very high risk of heart disease based on the following additional tests:
• Your HDL/Cholesterol ratio
• Your Triglyceride/HDL ratios HDL percentage is a very potent heart disease risk factor. Just divide your HDL level by your cholesterol. That percentage should ideally be above 24 percent. You can also do the same thing with your triglycerides and HDL ratio. That percentage should be below 2.

In this subject, like in any, there is no “truth”. You will have to choose the side you like better.

My side is that most of the information of saturated fat and cholesterol has been “handle” by grain oil producers in the 50īs and by drug producers in our time. The fact is that man has been around millions of years eating saturated fat with no harm. Only now, became a health hazard.

Part of the medical establishment believe that a high LDL ( “bad” cholesterol) is harmful to your health. Some others believe that what really hurts your heart is a low HDL( “good” cholesterol) . You can increase you HDL cholesterol with exercise and with fish oil. I prefer this last way of doing things. You are not taking drugs but doing something natural like exercise.

The ‘standard’ medical solution for high cholesterol is to prescribe a statin drug. Whereas these are generally effective in lowering cholesterol…some people pay a price…in side effects! These can range from damaged livers, muscle aches and even impotency. You may want to check this information.

Many heart attacks and strokes occur because of hardening and narrowing of the arteries due to the build up of plaque and fatty deposits within them. you may want to check this information.
