Omega 3 Dosage For Itching Pitbull

by Amanda
(MI)

Hi, I have a 3yr old rednose pit. She didn’t start itching until about 1 1/2. Now she just won’t stop! We have her on a pretty good dog food (Premium Edge Salmon) but also decided to start her on Omega-3 pills. I give them to her 1 pill (1000mg) every day and she was about 60lbs.

The question I have is that the EPA and DHA together are 600mg, is that bad?

Thanks, Amanda.

Answer:
HI Amanda. The omega 3 dosage is not an exact science. It depends on several factors like age, health status and type of diet. Particularly, the omega 6 fats (dry food is basically dry grains, omega 6) counteract the effect of the omega 3 you are given her.

In your case, I would recommend you increase your omega 3 dosage (or decrease the omega 6 by switching to a raw diet) every week until you see a change in her itching. Then, you can back down the omega 3 dosage a bit. That should be the dosage for her particular case.

Best wishes,
Alfredo E.
