Numbness and Pain From Fish Oil

by Levi
(Canada(Montreal))

Hello. I am disagreeing with the conclusions in regards to no side effects from fish oil intake. My father and I both have suffered acute pain and numbness in fingers and hands after taking fish oil capsules. I have to stop taking them now, as my father had too.

It is extremely painful and I can't even hold a pencil, my cup or raise my hand up to my head without suffering numbness. I wake up with no feeling in my fingers and hand, and it comes and goes all day. To me, these are not worth taking the capsules

Note From The Editor

Hello Levi. Thanks for you contribution to this panel. We would like to get some more information of how did you determine that the fish oil was the cause of your pain, what kind of fish oil, if there were other factors that would increase or diminish the pain, etc. All input you can give us.

It is really the first time I hear something like that

stiffness in hands from fish oil
by: Anonymous

Hello. I have the same problem. Started taking fish oil capsules, one a day. My hands were progressively getting stiffer and increasingly sore. This was originally only in the mornings, then extended to the whole day. Concerned, i googled it and found others who had similar symptoms and believed that the fish oil had caused this. So i stopped taking fish oil and now my hands are back to normal, no stiffness what so ever. I'm a 29 year old otherwise healthy female.

So i can only conclude that myself and a few others out there react to something in the fish oil. I have no problems eating seafood so it would be nice to know exactly what it is so that i could avoid in the future.

Answer:

I would suggest you determine if your reaction is only to that specific fish oil, buying a better quality product. For example, a molecularly distilled fish oil.

If you still react in the same way, it could be interesting to see if your reaction to all forms of omega 3 fats is again showing the same result. You could try cod liver oil or krill oil.

It would be great if you could report back to us.

Best wishes,

Alfredo E.

When they catch the fish for makeing fish oil caps you are allowed x amount of jellyfish per ton.

They have a toxin that can give you a tingling effect. Buy a better quality brand of Omega 3 caps.

Lysi cod fish oil

Seems it is so - yesterday I took 2 desert-spoon-full of that oil and quite soon started to feel strong numbness in both hands, bad coordination and lack of inner heat (especially left hand, numbs more, lacks tiny sense@skin).

Seems it comes as MS does - organism starts to eat away melanin, which one is kind of fish oil, when provoked by swallowed (digested) fish oil, immune system misbehavior, perhaps some immune suppressor may help in heavy sit. I hope it will calm down, avoiding fish

Numbness
by: Anonymous

I have been taking 1 capsule 1200mg per day, for 6 weeks. I can really start to feel my mood improve when taking it. However the numbness in lower legs, feet, forearms, and hands is really starting to bother me. Not painful just weird. These are Costco Kirkland enteric coated.

Is the dose to high? Maybe once a week? What percentage of people are getting the numbness? I am not taking any other supplements. Anyone with more information please share. I plan a check with my Doctor soon. Thanks 43 year old male.

Answer.

A high fish oil dose is considered above 10.000 mg per day. Even at those doses, you are not supposed to feel anything like numbness. The minimum dose I recommend is 900 mg per day of omega 3 fats (EPA plus DHA from the label), which is close to 3.000 mg of fish oil per day. That if you are at your ideal weight and don´t have any degenerative diseases like high blood pressure, high triglycerides, diabetes, obesity, etc. In that case, start with 6.000 mg per day of fish oil.

I would say, stop taking the fish oil for a few days and restart again, so you can certainly relate the numbness with fish oil. Then, you can decide if your numbness is worse than the benefits you get from omega 3.

Keep in mind that some of the side effects some people experiment disappear after a few weeks. You can always try a different manufacturer to be sure it not the one you era buying that is causing the problem.

Please, read Fish oil benefits

Please, write again with the information on your experience.

Best wishes,

Alfredo E.

Numbness

I have been getting numbness also these past few weeks, and have been trying to think of ANY reason why I would get this...it just hit me tonight that perhaps it is the fish oil I started a few weeks ago....

I have not taken the last two days and my numbness has decreased....but I am not convinced it is the reason yet...but I think I will definitely go without a few weeks to see....does anyone know if there is measurable amounts of mercury in these things???

Swollen and burning hands upon waking
by: Cassie

After reading your comments I think I may have found the source of sudden and worrying problem. I have only started taking fish oil tablets a week ago and every morning since (progressively getting worse) I have woken with swollen, red, burning/itchy hands.

The swelling seems to go down within an hour or so of getting up but my hands are irritated on and off all day. I will stop taking the fish oil tablets as that is the only thing I have changed in my diet and post my progress.

Be my guest, please.

I too get numbness in hands
by: Jason

I also get numbness in my fingers when on fish oil, even one capsule in one day, having gone without for weeks before. I also work at a computer all day and thought it might be the beginnings of carpel tunnel, but testing off and on I realized that taking fish oil amplifies numbness, most of the time when not on fish oil I don't feel numbness.

I am 31 years old and male, 6'2, 170lbs. I am on NO prescriptions for anything. I do not however get any pain from fish oil. I otherwise eat a fairly balanced diet and take a multivitamin every other day. I have always thought the recommended amount of fish oil was extremely high. I only take one about every 3 days or so. (they recommend 2-3 per day!)
