Omega-3 Fish Oil - How to Get The Benefits of Eating Fish
Question: Omega-3 Fish Oil. I do not like the smell or taste of fish, however I also know that fish is good for you. I have been told that Tilapia is very mild and not fishy. Do you have a suggestion? By Mary
Answer: Omega-3 Fish Oil. Some fish have certain fatty acids called Omega 3. But not all fish have them, specially if they are farm grown. They are fed grains instead of their natural diets in order to make them grow fat fast. They become fat as we do when we eat grains. The same happens to cattle, they become fat but deprived of omega 3 fatty acids. Ideally we should be taking the omega 3 we need from fish, like our ancestors had been doing for thousands of years. We could be eating a diet rich in fish, shellfish and free range cattle, like many doctors and nutritionists still propose. There are several problems with this idea. Normally our ancestors had their fish(or meat)raw and from clean uncontaminated waters; today we cook at high temperatures, oxidising the delicate omega 3 fats( bringing them useless) and all oceans are contaminated with so much pollutants that it is difficult to have a piece of mercury free fish. As you know mercury is highly toxic for humans. Besides, there is also the mercury you get into your system when you eat fish. The best answer is the fish oil supplements you get at the supermarket. They have a process called molecular distillation that takes out the mercury and other toxins, you can measure the amounts you want and the after taste is eliminated. when you take fish oil as a supplement you are not only avoiding any possible contaminants that the actual fish may have but now you have more control over the amounts of EPA and DHA ingested. This is relevant in the case you are taking it for therapeutic reasons; now you can measure and make changes in case your blood test indicates the need for it. With supplements you don’t have to eat a lot of fish, in case you don’t like it, and can avoid possible fish intoxication (relevant for small children and the elderly, the 2 most important ages to take omega 3) In short, even the fish that normally would have omega 3 have no omega 3 if they are fed grains. That is the case of salmon and many more. You have to be careful. That is also the case with tilapia, it is farm grown. No omega 3. Even in their natural state tilapia has not much omega 3.
