Healthy Eating Habits - Hard Choices, My Changes And Its Results
"making the necessary changes to have healthy habits is to be responsible with yourself and the first step for a better life"
Question: Healthy Eating Habits. I am 46 years old and last summer, July 2006 after much fussing from my wife, kids and other family members, I went to the doctor to get my "aches and pains" sorted out. I basically had become a couch sponge, eating what I wanted to excess. I had quit smoking in August 2004 and in turn had just swapped Marlboros for Reece Cups and Mountain Dews, biscuits and gravy, double quarter pounders or whatever else sounded good. I ballooned up to over 250lbs and at the time of my physical I weighed 245lbs and wore a size 44 pant, Double XL shirts. On July 27th I was diagnosed Type II diabetic, high blood pressure ( 185 over 120) and my cholesterol readings were astronomical. That night I took the doctors advice to heart and started walking, vowing to change my diet and get control of my health. That first night I couldn't hardly walk a half a mile but I did it. I totally gave up all sweets, sodas, fried foods, breads, fast food etc.......extreme changes in my way of thinking. I walked every night and quickly dropped 10 lbs and increased my distance every night. I worked my way up to 4 miles a night and ordered the "XVest" and by Thanksgiving was down to an amazing (to me!) 192lbs! I went from a size 44 waist to a 36 inch waist and I felt 100% better! My first 3 month follow up showed that my blood sugar was down from 300+ to an average of 98, blood pressure 105 over 65 and my cholesterol numbers well in check. The biggest change was in my A1C score: from 10.8 down to 5.4. My doctor reduced my Glucoflage down to just one a day and I believe that she will soon take me off all my meds, which is one of my goals. This morning I weighed 188 and have lost 2 more inches (able to wear a size 34 pant) and that loose skin is tightening up. I never and I am mean NEVER thought I would wear a size 34 pant and a size Large shirt again. This has been a truly amazing journey and I am so excited about where I am headed. My wife of 23 years has been so supportive and encourages me everyday as do my 2 teenage daughters. I have never posted anything like this before but I decided that I would in the hopes that maybe someone might find it encouraging. People seem surprised when they see me and I have heard all kinds of things; "are you sick?" to "what kind of pills are you taking?" Really all I've done is simple things: Changed my diet, started walking and doing alittle exercise. Not really brain surgery is it? My new goal: Get my weight down to 180lbs, continue to tighten up that loose gut and get stronger. Instead of trying to walk every night I am walking 4 times a week (4 miles with 30lbs in the Xvest) and doing my daily morning exercises and the Total Gym workout the other 3 nights. Again thanks and I apologize for the long winded post. Mark Answer: Healthy Eating Habits. Congratulations Mark: Even if it may sound simple, not many are able to do what you have accomplished. Most quit after 4 months to gain everything back. You have been very consistent. My best wishes, Alfredo E. P.S. Don’t forget your daily fish oil for your entire family.
