Mini jack russell and fish oil
Hi. I really want to give my mini jack russell Possom, who is 15yrs old, fish oil. My question is how much for a little old dog that weighs about 5kg? Bearing in mind that I had another little dog who died recently with a fatty pancreas so any oils were worsening her condition, I was giving her fish oil but the vet says that it contributed to the fatty pancreas as did eggs and olive oil.
I want to help Possom because she is going a little deaf blind and i think she may be developing an Alzheimer’s type syndrome..Advice &help appreciated from the bottom of our hearts...
Answer.
Sorry to hear you are having a tough time with Possom. I believe you should not have any kind of fear about giving her one fish oil capsule of fish oil every day. That is equivalent to 300 mg of omega 3 fats, EPA plus DHA, from the label.
Dogs need omega 3 for the same reasons humans do. Every cell of our body needs a certain amount of omega 3 in order to function at its optimal capacity. If we do not get it, like in modern day diets that have 20 to 50 times less omega 3 that what we need, our deterioration accelerate and degenerative diseases set in. Our diets, like the dry food diets the dogs eat, are loaded with processed grains our digestion is not prepared to handle.
Fatty liver and fatty pancreas is not due to a high “good” fat diet but to a high grain diet (it is high in omega 6 fats). It produces chronic inflammation in every organ of our body. You should think of eliminating grains from your dog’s diet and go for a real dog’s diet, with raw meat and bones, that is what her digestion is made to process.
