Is fish in Danger Because of Fish oil?

by April
(USA)

I take omega 3 supplement capsules and was just wondering about this. I have no problem with the fish oil caps, but am worried about my purchase and it's effect on the fish population and such...

I use flax seed oil as alternative at times. Does anyone know exactly what part the oil is extracted from and what happens to the rest? Are these fish in good population?

Thanks.

Answer:

Most fish oil is made from the disposed parts of the fish that are not used for retail. That is, the leftovers of commercial fish, like skin, organs, etc. Fish oil is sardines and other small fish caught in the ocean.

Flax seed oil in not a good alternative to fish oil. The omega 3 fatty acid present in flax seed oil is Alpha Linolenic Acid, ALA. The body can only use omega 3 as Docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, and Eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA. So, it has to convert ALA into EPA and DHA.

The problem here is that the conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA, which is the only way our body can use it, is very inefficient, about a 10-15%. That is also the reason why the majority of Omega 3 fatty acids consumed, EPA and DHA, come from animal sources, mainly fish. Fatty fishes are specially rich in omega 3 fatty acids.

So it would be better is you use a fish oil.
