Fish oil for a mixed breed dog

Hi, I have a 59 pounds mixed breed puppy and I give him 1 fish oil capsule everyday. Shall I give him more or less ? What is the correct amount once he grows up? Is the amount correct for his weight?.

The fish oil I am using is for people, should I stop and use fish oil especially for dogs? My vet says it is ok to use it with my dog, what do you say?

Carlos

Answer:

Hi Carlos. In general, you can use any fish oil for humans with your dog. Just make sure you don’t buy the Omega 3 6 fish oil they sell in supermarkets at a lower price. The omega 6 is the enemy you are trying to compensate when you supplement with omega 3.

The problem that causes all the degenerative diseases you see today in pets is that dry food you feed your dog with. It has loads of omega 6 because it is made from grains, dry grains, which are completely unnatural to a dog’s diets. He needs meats, not grains, it does not matter what food manufactures say.

You don’t say what omega 3 content has the fish oil you are giving your dog but if it is 1.000 mg of fish oil with 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA, it is correct for your dog at it current weight. I would say if your dog gets to be a big, 100 pounds dog, you will have to give him 2 capsules if fish oil a day, that is 2.000 mg of fish oil.

Please, read Pet food

Good luck.

P.S. Don’t forget your daily omega 3 for your entire family. You can find omega 3 in Cod Liver Oil, Krill Oil and Fish Oil, molecularly distilled, free of impurities sent anywhere in the world at low reasonable price, Omega 3 Store
