High Omega 3 Dosages

Hi,I take anywhere from 10 to 16 grams a day (10,000 - 16,000 mg) of cholesterol-free omega 3 capsules for it's numerous benefits including the benefits it provides to the circulatory system and the brain. I've been taking this high dosage for at least two and a half months.
I heard somewhere that it can lead to strokes and problems with blood clotting. I have no problem forming scabs if I get cut, but, can problems with blood clotting cause a stroke even though I form scabs fine? And how does fish oil cause strokes? Are there any other dangers caused by fish oil?

Sean: First, you will have to understand that omega 3 fatty acids (fish oil) are ESSENTIAL fatty acids. It means that if you don’t get enough omega 3 in your diet, eventually you will get ill.
Second, what you are taking as cholesterol-free omega 3 is generally known as omega 3 for vegetarians. All omega 3 coming from animal origin have some cholesterol. What you are taking is an omega 3 from vegetal origin, probably a flaxseeds oil.
This omega 3 is in the form of Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) which the body has to convert to Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in order to be able to assimilate it. The omega 3 from animal origin comes in the form of EPA and DHA that the body can use directly, without converting it to anything else.
Basically, the convertion of ALA to EPA and DHA is VERY inefficient, only 5-10% can be switched.
So, when you say you are taking 10 to 16 grams a day you may be taking much less. But don´t worry the recommendation some doctors have for omega 3 is 1000 mg of fish oil for every 10 pounds of body weight.
That is more that what you are taking. The omega 3 dosage for depression and ADHD is generally in high side, 6-10 grams a day of fish oil
Off course, you will find doctors and people that will say, you need the doctor’s approval to start taking it. Some doctors would like to give their approval even before they let you go to the bathroom, do exercise and all kind of natural things. It is up to you to follow their advice.
What would had happened to the Ennuis (Antarctic natives ) who used to eat ONLY high omega 3 animals with no other foods, without having any major degenerative disease, strokes or blood clotting problems?
