Healthy Diet Plans. When you are at your healthy or ‘ideal’ weight, it not only feels good, you also tend to be happier with your body. Usually, we are so young at that glorious moment, we are not conscious of the importance of that feeling of being at the perfect weight and the implications it could have in our future health.


The years pass by and in the blink of an eye we have gained 10-20 pounds. You begin down the long road of weight problems. I can personally attest to that. From a Healthy Weight to Obesity

Let´s start at the beginning:

Healthy Diet Plans - Who Is Overweight or Obese.

Accepted categories within the medical community for levels of obesity are:

  • Overweight men: BMI (Body Mass Index) higher than 25.
  • Obese men: BMI higher than30.
  • Overweight Women: BMI higher than 30.
  • Obese woman: BMI higher than 35.

However, BMI (Body Mass Index) can be deceiving. For example if you are a muscular person you can have a high BMI and not be obese or overweight. Therefore, weight may be better understood if we express it as fat percentage of total weight.

Thus we could say that: Normal or healthy weight men are 15 to 20% fat. Overweight men: higher than 30% fat. Healthy weight woman: 20 to 25% fat. Overweight women: higher than 35% fat.

All of the above might not mean much but when you look at yourself. You know when you have good body fat percentage, or a healthy weight. You can feel it in your body. Nobody has to tell you.

Healthy Diet Plans - Why Is A Healthy Weight Important?


If we fall out of a healthy weight range and get into overweight or obese categories, it is important to know that there is a very high possibility you may develop one, or several, of the following disorders (if you don´t already have them):

  • Diabetes.
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke.
  • Hypertension.
  • Gallbladder disease.
  • Osteoarthritis (degeneration of cartilage and bone of the joints)
  • Sleep apnea and other breathing problems.
  • Some forms of cancer (uterine, breast, colorectal, kidney, and gallbladder). Read about Anti Cancer Diet
  • High blood cholesterol
  • Pregnancy complications. Hirsutism (excess body and facial hair).
  • Psychological disorders such as depression
  • Increased surgical risk.
  • Physical incapacity to perform simple tasks.

As you may know, the world population overall is getting fatter by the minute. Obesity is becoming the 21st century’s plague. For example, 65% of US adults are overweight and 30% are obese. That sounds incredible to me… Meanwhile diabetes is becoming pandemic, even in young adults.

This may not mean anything to many of us, even if we are already part of the obesity problem. It is when we start to suffer its effects that we begin to think that maybe, yes maybe, not for sure, something is wrong. But yeah, it probably won’t do me any harm, we all wish. But the reality may be very different, and when it hits, it hits hard. Our life is at risk.

Healthy Diet Plans - Why Is All This Happening?

weight problems Some 50 years ago, the medical community started to get the message from the vegetable oil industry, from various distinguished medical figures, that all saturated fat was unhealthy, leading to high cholesterol and clogged arteries. By contrast, if you used corn, soybean, sunflower, etc. oils, you would get no clogged arteries, no cholesterol, and no heart disease.

When people started to get fatter and fatter on this high Omega 6 vegetable oil diet, came the low fat diet. Nothing was known about Omega 3 and weight loss. Dr. Nathan Pritikin and his followers believed that if you ate a diet low in fats you would loose fat. Actually, when you reduce your fat intake you have to compensate by eating more carbohydrates (Omega 6), since the protein we eat tends to remain constant.

With less fat in your diet, less satiation occurs, you get hungry more often, more binging, higher insulin, and more carbohydrates being converted to fat deposits. So actually, you get fatter. That is what has been happening in the last 50 years all over the world, especially in the United States.

When we eat those tasty fried foods (fried in vegetable oils, full of trans fats), crackers, breads, cookies, etc., our body makes its own saturated fat to feed our cells and fat deposits, but with a difference; it’s made from omega 6 fatty acids creating an overload of omega 6 fats.

This disrupts the natural balance of Omega 6 to 0mega 3, which should be close to 1:1, bringing it to 20 or more times higher, and setting the stage for accelerating aging and degenerative diseases like cardiovascular disease, arthritis, general inflammation, cancer, etc. Healthy Diet Plans.
