From a Healthy Weight to Obesity
When you are at your ideal or healthy weight it not only feels good, you are happy to be in your body. Somehow we are too young to know any better, we are not conscious of that sensation. The years pass and in the blink of an eye you have 10-20 more pounds. You started the hard way of weight problems. As Doctor George Sheehan said, the philosopher of runners, “Life is a fight against lard”Letīs start by the beginning:

Who is Overweight or Obese.
The majority of the medical community has accepted overweightness and obesity as:
Overweight men: a BMI higher than 25
Obese men: a BMI higher than30
Overweight Women: BMI higher than 30
Obese woman: BMI higher than 35.
This BMI (Body mass index) can be deceiving if you are a muscular person. In that case, you can have a high BMI and not be obese or overweight. I believe, all this can be better understood if we express it as fat percentage of the total weight.
In that case, we could say that: Normal or healthy weight men: 15 to 20 % fat. Overweight men: higher then 30% fat. Healthy weight woman: 20 to 25% fat. Overweight women: higher than 35% fat.
All the above doesn’t mean much when you look at yourself. You know when you are at your ideal weight, or have a healthy weight. You can feel it in all your body. Nobody has to tell you.
Why Healthy Weight is Important?.
If we fall out of the healthy weight and get into the overweight or obesity numbers, it is significant to know that you have very high possibility to get one, or several, of the following disorders (if you donīt already have it):
- Diabetes.
- Heart disease
- Stroke.
- Hypertension.
- Gallbladder disease.
- Osteoarthritis (degeneration of cartilage and bone of the joints)
- Sleep apnea and other breathing problems.
- Some forms of cancer (uterine, breast, colorectal, kidney, and gallbladder).
- High blood cholesterol
- Pregnancy complications. Hirsutism (excess body and facial hair).
- Psychological disorders such as depression
- Increased surgical risk.
- Physical incapacity to perform simple tasks. This may be the worst, psychologically.
As you may know, the general world population is getting fatter by the minute. Obesity is becoming the 21st century plague. For example, 65% of US adults are overweight and 30% are obese. That sounds incredible to me.... Diabetes is becoming pandemic, even in young adults.
This may not mean anything to many, even if we are part of the obesity problem. It is when we start to suffer its effects that we think that maybe, yes maybe, not for sure, it is getting to me. Oh yeah, probably it won’t do me any harm, we all wish. But reality may be something else, and when it hits, it hits hard. Our life is at risk.
Why is All This Happening?
Some 50 years ago the medical community started to get the message from the vegetable oil industry, obviously by some high medical figure, that all saturated fat was unhealthy: high cholesterol, clogged arteries. By contrast, if you used corn, soybean, sunflower, etc, oil you will not get clogged arteries, no cholesterol.
When people started to get fatter and fatter on the high Omega 6 vegetable oil diet, then came the low fat diet. Nothing was known about omega 3 and weight loss. Dr. Nathan Pritikin and his followers believed that if you ate a diet low in fats you would loose fat. Actually, when you reduce your fat intake you have to compensate by eating more carbohydrates(omega 6), since the protein we eat tends to remain constant.
With less fat less satiation, more binging, higher insulin, more carbohydrates converted to fat deposits. So, actually you get fatter. That is what has been happening the last 50 years all over the world, and specially in the US of America.
When we eat those tasty fry foods(fried in vegetable oils, full of trans fats), crackers, breads, cookies, etc, our body makes its own saturated fat to feed our cells and fat deposits, with a difference; it’s made from omega 6 fatty acids creating overloads of omega 6. This disrupts the natural balance of omega 6 / 0mega 3, which should be close to 1:1, brings it to 20 or more times higher; creating the stage for accelerating aging and degenerative diseases like cardiovascular disease, arthritis, general inflammation, cancer, etc.
