Good Sources Of Omega 3
by Mel
You see, I love keeping my body healthy by eating & drinking healthy foods & drinks. I used to take a supplement of Fish Oil 1000mg so that I could benefit from the Omega 3 intake.
However, although I like taking a food supplement, I am very conscious of how much of anything I put inside my body & would rather take one or two supplements at a nice, low dosage.
I spoke to a Pharmacist at Boots, who advised me that taking anything in too high a dose is not really a good idea as it can be toxic & the body gets rid of it anyway. So, I chucked out my fish oil 1000mg so that I could go back to the shop & buy a lower dose. Unfortunately, all I can find is the same strength of fish oil I already had (what a waste of my money!).
I already eat a healthy diet with lots of fish & I take one or two supplements of Evening Primrose Oil daily too. I guess what I really want to ask is, what other foods & drinks are an excellent source of Omega 3?
Thanks.
Answer:
Mel: The best source of omega 3 should be oily fish from deep cold ocean waters. Unfortunately, we have contaminated our oceans and this fish have high mercury (a neurotoxin) content.
Now, it does not mean that if you eat a fish you are going to get poisoned but that if you eat enough fish to get the recommended omega 3 dosage, you could suffer the consequences.
Any animal that eats grass is a nice omega 3 source. Unfortunately, most of the animals we eat these days are raised with grains. These animals are not omega 3 rich but omega 6…You can look for grass fed cattle
The omega 3 you find in the market from vegetable origin like flaxseeds, flaxseeds oil, etc, sometimes called vegetarian omega 3 is not as good a source as the animal omega 3.
It has to be processed in our body or converted to EPA and DHA. Usually only 5-10% can be converted, so it can be a waste of your money.
The dosage you were taking is less than the minimum the American Heart Association recommends for prevention, which is 3 grams of fish oil per day (Close to 900 mg of omega 3 fatty acids).
Some doctors recommend 1 gram of fish oil for every 10 pounds of weight for optimum health. More if you have a specific diseases you want to fight.
