Fish with Omega 3

fish with omega 3

Question

I've read that oil from salmon, tuna, and some deep-sea fishes contain Omega 3 and are, therefore, healthy. Do oils from freshwater fish like tilapia or catfish contain Omega 3, too? Are they, at least, healthy?

have very little omega 3"

Answer:

Tilapia and catfish contain very little omega 3. In theory, we should take our omega 3 eating deep water fatty fish, like you said. In reality, we have contaminated so much our oceans that most fish may have the potential to harm you, if you take it often, because of the Mercury the fish accumulates in their body.

Best Dietary Sources of EPA and DHA:

  • Herring.
  • Mackerel.
  • Sardines.
  • Pilchards.
  • Salmon.
  • Trout.
  • Tuna.
  • Krill.
  • New Zealand green lipped muscles.

Ideally we should be taking the omega 3 we need from fish, like our ancestors had been doing for thousands of years. We could be eating a diet rich in fish, shellfish and free range cattle, like many doctors and nutritionists still propose. There are several problems with this idea.

Normally our ancestors had their fish(or meat)raw and from clean uncontaminated waters; today we cook at high temperatures, oxidising the delicate omega 3 fats( bringing them useless) and all oceans are contaminated with so much pollutants that it is difficult to have a piece of mercury free fish. As you know mercury is highly toxic for humans.

Mercury is a poison that can have terrible consequences in your neurological system. That is why it is better to take the fish oil as a capsule or supplement.

In order to know if the supplement is of good quality you can rely in an independent source like consumerlab.com where they list fish oils by brand.
