Fish Oil: Vision Sensitivity and Head Pain

by Michelle
(Mississauga,Ontario,Canada)

Hi. I take Omega -3 (fish oil) for 2 weeks. From the first capsule I felt sensitivity in my eyes, sensitivity to light, especially in the morning and kind of pressure on my eyeballs. Also I get a mild pain on the back of my head.

My boyfriend is bipolar ( I recommended to him after some research), it seems it works for him, but he sleeps too much( i am worried that this may be depression, though he is more of hyper maniac).

Also he complained about weird heart beats and i noticed same feeling accompanied with heart pain at the beginning, but now it's gone.

My eyes as i said are very sensitive and the most bothering is the feeling of pressure over my eyeballs (i have conjunctivitis, but the itch is gone since i am taking 1 capsule a day: 500 mg EPA, 70 DHA).I also feel sleepy, but i do have the feeling of being relaxed..maybe too relaxed.

Otherwise i feel contempt with the fact that i got rid of my constipation, my skin looks better, my bones joints do not swallow anymore..but i do not feel as active as i used to be.

The capsules are made of fish from Peru. I heard that there are safe, as no pollution has reached their waters. I am still taking the fish oil hoping that the headache and eye pressure will disappear with time, the same way the heart pain & beats do not occur so often anymore.

I am 33 yrs old, have no disease, but i like to eat chocolate a lot, i am not diabetic yet (my father only).

Please advise me. Krill Oil would be better for a change?

Thank you.

Answer:

Hello Michelle. Some people is very sensitive when they start to take fish oil, I would recommend that you stay a couple of more weeks to see if things improve. Otherwise change the brand name, preferably a “molecularly distilled” fish oil that has less impurities.

The fish oil you are taking has a very high EPA proportion to DHA, 500/70. It is the first time I see something like that, it usually is 180 EPA/ 120 DHA. If you buy a different brand, I would suggest trying this type of ratio.

The fish oil dosage I recommend for a perfectly healthy person at its ideal weight is 3.000 mg of fish oil per day (900 mg of omega 3 fats, EPA plus DHA). If you are overweight or have any other health disorder is 6.000 mg per day of fish oil.

By all means, continue with your efforts to adapt to fish oil, it has so many benefits for your health. Please read Fish Oil Benefits

Please, be patient

Alfredo E.

Eye Problems and fish oil

I too have been taking fish oil for over 12 months and have had the same eye sensitivity, burning and sometimes blurring. I hoped it would reduce but is getting worse.

Eye problems from fish oil
by: Jack

Finally, I see other people who have had eye problems from fish oil. I have been taking a great brand of fish oil for almost 10 years and my eyes have gotten worse over the years. They are red, burn, blurry at times and just feel tired behind the eyes. Light drives me crazy and I am always wear sunglasses, avoid bright lights, especially fluorescent lights.

I had no idea it could be the fish oil and stopped taking it a month ago and have noticed a big improvement in my eyes and also my neck and face would get bright red and do not do that anymore!

I think the fish oil must affect the blood vessels and cause them to dilate causing redness and major eye discomfort. No allergy when eating fish once in a while, so must be the concentrated oil!

Hi, i have just started taking the standard fish oil dose of 180 epa and 120 dha and also noticed the same effects on my eyes. i was wondering if the previous person who made the side effect quote has been clear of it now. i will continue to take the oil for a few more weeks and see how i go
