Cholesterol Medication and Fish Oil

Hi. I have been taking fish oil twice a day for some time. I have had some of the side effects but have gone away in a few days. I have developed dizziness. This has been for about a week. I am taking cholesterol medication for years. Could this be my problem?

Answer:

Yes, you could be right. Cholesterol medication is very good to lower cholesterol but has many side effects. I would be very carefully to continue with the cholesterol medication. Please, Google CHOLESTEROL MEDICATION SIDE EFFECTS. You will get a long list.

Cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease but part of the repair system the body uses when it is attacked by INFLAMMATION.

Cholesterol is not the enemy, it is very important part of your hormonal and immune system the body needs it to stay healthy. Inflammation is produced mainly by a high carbohydrate diet that is pro inflammatory with too many omega 6.

You need the anti inflammatory properties of omega 3 to have a healthy cardiovascular system, and to exercise everyday ( anti inflammatory).

If you take 6.000 mg a day of fish oil, it will improve your cholesterol profile by increasing the “good” HDL cholesterol and by lowering your triglycerides, the 2 real markers of cardiovascular health (triglycerides under 100 and HDL cholesterol above 70)

Please, read Fish Oil and Heart Disease

Please, let me know the result.
Best wishes,

Alfredo E.

Leg cramps, Statins and Fish Oil

by Ruth
(Michigan)

Hello. I had started having night time leg cramps that awakened me and required me to quickly get up and stand or walk around. It was very disruptive of sleep. The frequency increased. I consulted a few physicians who thought it from pinched nerves in my back, etc. It started to happen during the day.

Then, I also started having finger cramps that I had to use my other hand to straighten out my fingers. I felt desperate. In the past I had developed leg cramps with burning pain after being on statins for several years. These burning leg pains & cramps on the inner thigh from hip to knee stopped when I stopped the statins. Tried different statins, including red yeast rice, and each one caused the same symptom that went away when the med was stopped. The other distinct leg cramps started while on the statins but did not go away when the statins were stopped.

I tried stopping other prescribed meds, but cramps continued. Finally I ran out of the Fish Oil capsules and I forgot to purchase more. My leg cramps seemed to decrease after a couple days without the 1000mg capsules Fish Oil I had been told by my cardiologist to take twice a day. A couple more days and my runny, drippy nose had dried up too. I believe that I was/am allergic to the fish oil capsules. I have no known food allergies.

THanks.

Answer:
Ruth, you may be right, it could be the fish oil that is worsening your situation. Perhaps you may be allergic to some of the minor impurities found in that particular fish oil.

I f I were in your situation, I would restart taking the same fish oil to establish a clear relationship with your symptoms, if they come back. If they do come back, I would buy a better quality fish oil like the one we sell here (molecularly distilled).

If you still have the problems, I would buy krill oil or cod liver oil, the other 2 alternatives to omega 3 fish oil.

Please, let me know the results.

Best wishes.

Fish Oil And Heart Palpitations

by Ann
(South Australia)

Omega 3 for heart palpitations

Omega 3 for heart palpitations

Question: Hi. I want to know if there are any side effects to taking fish oil such as palpitations or chest pain? I have recently increased my dose to 3 caps. per day and am having more angina attacks lately and am wondering if they could be liked to fish oil.

A friend has told me she gave up fish oil because of palpitations.

Thanks.

Answer:

Ann, fish oil is well known for reducing the frequency and severity of heart palpitations. Fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids have been studied for heart arrhythmia more than any other natural supplements. Fish oils stabilize cardiac cell membranes.

Nevertheless, I always recommend to my readers to test things for themselves. Stay out of fish oil for one or two weeks, check how many episodes you feel and then go back to fish oil again. Then you can establish if the fish oil may have something to do with your chest pains and palpitations.

Keep in mind that the cause of your problems could come from several sources, for example, if your thyroid is not working properly, you could have palpitations. Perhaps any other drug you are taking has something to do, and finally, your fish oil brand may be involved.

Also, a diet high in starches (mainly wheat, maize and sugars) and a life with no exercise is going exacerbate your heart troubles. Make sure you read Omega 3 Diet

Please, read Fish Oil and Heart Disease

Please, let us know how things develop.

Best wishes,

Alfredo E.

Nose Bleeds On Fish Oil

Hi, our boys have both been on daily fish oil capsules since age 2 (EPA 351.7mg, DHA 248.3mg). My 7 year old has been having 2nd daily nose bleeds which can be quite dramatic. Our Dr. knows nothing about fish oil and just says stop taking it.

I am interested in gaining more info on the side effect of nose bleeds and anticoagulation. Is it self limiting? Can you elaborate on this side effect at all?
Thanks.

Answer:

Congratulations for understanding the importance fish oil supplementation has in the development of healthy children.

My understanding is that fish oil has a controlling or balancing effect regarding blood coagulation, more than an anti coagulation agent, as most people believe. Meaning that if your blood tends to coagulate or make thrombus, taking fish oil may have a balancing effect but if your coagulation is normal it may have no major effect.
I copy a paragraph of the Journal of Nutrition, “Fish Oil Consumption and Reduction of Arterial Disease” by Kristof Vanschoonbeek, Moniek P. M. de Maat and Johan W. M. Heemskerk
“Fish oil consumption may help to normalize the prethrombotic state and reduce arterial disease. This antithrombotic potential of fish oil, rich in (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), has been attributed to a reduction in platelet activation, a lowering of plasma triglycerides and (vitamin K–dependent) coagulation factors and/or a decrease in vascular tone. Most intervention studies have shown only moderate effects of (n-3) PUFA on these hemostatic variables. On the other hand, the usually small prolongation in bleeding time with fish oil does not appear to lead to bruising or hemorrhage, at least in healthy subjects. This contrasts with the increased bleeding risk accompanying the more prominent antihemostatic effects of antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs.”

I would suggest you may reduce the present amounts of total omega 3 fats from 600 mg per day of EPA plus DHA to 300 mg, until they reach the age of 10. Then give them 600 mg per day until they are 15 years old.

Best wishes,
Alfredo E.

One Essential nutrient may be completely missing from our diets today, omega 3 fats. Omega 3 fats are essential for our hearts, minds and entire body. In fact, every cell of our organism needs omega 3 to work at its prime.

For the last 30 years, hundreds of clinical studies have documented the benefits of omega 3 fish oil. Even the conservative American Heart Association (AHA) recommends it for people with risks of cardiovascular disease.

The situation is that it is difficult to get the proper amounts of fish oil without risking dangerous contamination, if you want to take it from your diet.

As an answer to that need, we offer molecularly distilled fish oil that comes from deep water fish, Hoki, a deep sea fish naturally high in DHA and unique to New Zealand. The oil is refined through extensive molecular distillation processes to remove any form of contamination. Click here to learn more .

No More High Cholesterol With Omega 3

by Marilyn
(Florida)

My first cholesterol test was 273. The doctor immediately put me on a prescription statin. It worked, but was expensive and I didn't really want to take drugs.

Now I take fish oil and my most recent total cholesterol test was 159. I am a true believer.

Thanks.

Omega 3/Omega 6 Increase Bad Cholesterol?

by Hussain
(Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Hi. Does OMEGA3/OMEGA6 Cooking oil increase bad choletrol levels if used in frying food ? Secondly, how much of this oil should be used per day ?

Thanks.

Answer:

Hi Hussain: Omega 3 is never used for cooking mainly because it oxidizes at low temperatures and becomes rancid. What you may be talking about is that some commercial cooking oils (full of omega 6, pro inflammatory oil) deceive their buyers saying that it also contains omega 3.

That is not actually true, what they actually have is some small amounts of a kind of vegetable oil, flaxseed or other, that is in the form of ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid) which is a precursor of the real omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA). You see, it is a way to sell Omega 6 oils saying that it is omega 3. Read more at Nourishment

Now, regarding cholesterol, yes all vegetable cooking oils increase bad cholesterol, more if they have Trans Fats (partially hydrogenated oils), they damage the artery lining. On the other side, when you supplement with Omega 3, it does not change total cholesterol but changes 2 main cardiovascular markers, it increases HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol, that should be above 60) and it decrease triglycerides (should be below 100). You can have more information at Omega 3 and Heart Disease
My best to you,

Alfredo E.

P.S. Don’t forget your daily fish oil for your entire family and always take along an antioxidant, like vitamin E, to prevent oxidation inside your body. You can find omega 3 fish oil, molecularly distilled, free of impurities sent anywhere in the World at low reasonable price, please click here
