Fish Oil Negative effects

Can taking the omega 3 fish oil capsules be bad for your health? I know it's not approved by the FDA. But have they found any negative side effects? Can it be bad for your health?

Answer:

Charles: In medicine, omega 3 fatty acids are know as essential fatty acids, meaning the body needs a certain amount of it to be healthy…Otherwise we get ill. Now, the important reason why we should supplement with fish oil is that our food has become omega 3 depleted.. ..we get between 20 to 50 times less omega 3 that what we need. Please, read Omega 3 Deficiency

Basically what we should do is to have a good balance of omega 6 / omega 3 ratio, close to 1/1. In order to balance this ratio we should supplement with omega 3 at the same time that reduce the omega 6 ingestion ( all carbohydrates are omega6, pasta, breads, flours, grains, grain oils, etc). Please, read Eating the Omega 3 Way
.

As far as negative effects, omega 3 fats, are extremely susceptible to damage from heat, light, and oxygen. When exposed to these elements for too long, the fatty acids in the oil become oxidized, that is rancid.

As a result, oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids should be stored in dark glass, tightly closed containers in the refrigerator or freezer. In addition, these oils should never be heated on the stove. So, instead of sautéing your vegetables in flaxseed or walnut oil, make a salad dressing using these oils.

When purchasing an omega 3 fatty acid supplement, remember that these oils are highly sensitive to damage from heat, light and oxygen. Choose a certified organic product that has been refrigerated and is packaged in a dark brown or green glass jar and be sure to store the product in your refrigerator or freezer.

Some other side effects are:

  • Aftertaste. When you start taking fish oil it may appear, but should go away after a few days.
  • Some degree of diarrhea may initially show up, but not for long.
  • Blood thinning effect will aggregate if you are taking other blood thinners. But if you have any heart disorder, do not stop taking your Omega 3. It is always a heart healthy supplement. Tell your doctor.
  • Fishy burps. Try different times of the day, before and after meals. It could also be an indication that the oil you are taking could be rancid. Or it may disappear after a few days. Last, try freezing the caps, this way they don´t dissolve it in your stomach but in your intestine. One final idea, try enteric-coated fish capsules. That should do it.

Please, read Fish Oil Side Effects

    My best for you.
