Fish oil also for cats and dogs

Hello. I hear all the time talking about omega 3. I did not hear that, years ago. So, I need to take fish oil, OK, how much is the recommended dosage and for how long do I have to take it?

Stella

Answer:

Hi Stella. I recommend taking 3.000 mg of fish oil per day if you are healthy, and at your ideal weight, as a preventive measure, and to take 6.000 mg of fish oil if you are overweight, have hypertension, diabetes, or any other degenerative disease.

There is no official recommended dosage of omega 3. The American Heart Association recommends eating cold water fatty fish twice per week, if you are healthy, and to take 3.000 mg of fish oil per day (close to 900 mg of EPA plus DHA, the active ingredients in omega 3) if you have heart disease or heart disease risks.

Nevertheless, those recommendations are very conservative if you take in mind that omega 3 is an ESSENTIAL FATTY ACID (meaning if we don’t get enough we will get sick) and that 90% of the population of the United States is omega 3 deficient..
