Fish Oil For Itchy Chiguagua

by Monique
(Sacramento CA)

Hello. I have a 3 pound long hair Chihuahua with very itchy dry flaky skin and coat. Can I give him fish oil 1,000mg with total omega-3 fatty acids 300mg?

If so, how many capsules? How often do I give it and will it help the problems he's having with his skin and coat?

Answer:

Hi Monique. Yes, fish oil is a good answer for dry itchy skin in dogs and humans. The problem is that this is not an exact science, you have to find your proper dosage according to your age, sex, diet and the exercise you do.

In the case of dogs, they are usually fed dry food made out of grains, an unnatural diet for a carnivore. One of the side effects of this dry food is dry skin. Try to change some of the diet giving him a raw egg every day (he may not like initially but you can mix it with the dry food) and raw bones.

You can start with 1.000 mg fish oil capsule per day for a week or 2 and adjust accordingly.

Best wishes,
Alfredo E.

P.S. Don’t forget your daily omega 3 for your entire family. You can find omega 3 in Cod Liver Oil, Krill Oil and Fish Oil,molecularly distilled, free of impurities sent anywhere in the world at low reasonable price, Omega 3 Store

fish oil and itchy chihuahua

Also my 3 pounder is an extremely picky eater. He refuses to eat "any? dog food of any kind mixed with egg or not. He won?t eat raw food of any kind "PERIOD". So I'm pretty sure that's the cause of his itchy and dry skin and coat.

I just started giving him fish oil hopping it'll help. It?s the only thing he'll eat. He's scratching less but still isn't eating. And he's losing weight. The vet said he's not sick, just under weight. Is it safe for me to cook his food and put the fish oil in it? I know he likes cooked human food.

Answer:

If you cook the food with the fish oil in it, it will get oxidized or rancid due to high temperature. You can add the fish oil when the food is cool.

Maybe he needs time to get used to new foods or flavors but remember: ?nobody has died of hunger with food in front of him?.

Maybe you are overprotective?Do not let his food to be available all day, take it out of sight once he has stopped eating. Exercise brings appetite back, make him exercise every day for 30-60 minutes, you will see him looking for the plate.
