fish oil for gout
My doctor told me that my cholesterol was 248 and uric acid was at 9.0 with blood pressure at 150/96. As per his advice, I have gone through diet (limiting animal fat intake and eating lots of vegetables and fruits) and exercise (walking/running for 30 to 45 mins 4 times a week) for the last 4 months.
Now, I have lost 8 kg and my blood pressure is 138/80. However, cholesterol has increased a bit and uric acid level went down by 0.5. I would like to try taking some supplements and more strict diet before my doctor puts me on medication.
Because of the high uric acid, I am avoiding Herring, Mackerel, Sardines etc. However, to lower my cholesterol level, many are saying that it is good to take fish oil supplements.
Would these fish oil supplements also contain high purines to affect my uric acid? Would they increase uric acid level? How much should I take per day?
Thanks.
Answer:
I can see that you have been overweight and possible with not only high cholesterol but high triglycerides. Gout is also related to overweight.
Fish oil will help you in several ways, it will lower your triglycerides, improve your cholesterol profile by increasing your HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) and decreasing general inflammation. It will not decrease total cholesterol but this is not important if you have a high HDL cholesterol.
It will not increase in uric acid levels in blood.
I am pretty sure your doctor advised you to decrease your protein intake. Here is a list of the “standard” food to avoid:
Meat: organ meats, offal, meat extracts, veal, bacon, sweetbreads, meat gravies and broths, consommé/bullion.
Poultry: turkey, goose. Seafood: salmon, mackerel, trout, cod, herring, sardines, anchovies, mussels, crab, shrimp. Etc.
I would center my attention on reducing weight as fast as possible. Exercise is a key tool for that.
Here some Supplements you may want to take. Low purine diets are low in vitamins B, E and other antioxidants,
so supplementation is necessary to prevent damage from free radicals that can intensify gouty problems.
• B complex, One to three 50 mg tablets of the complete B complex daily
• Bromelain 500 mg twice daily, as an anti-inflammatory.
• Fish oil Take 4 grams of fish oil capsules a day to reduce the chances of inflammation.
