Fish Oil For Father In Nursing Home

Question:

My father is in a nursing home (he has Parkinson’s) and I don`t think refrigeration of fish oil capsules is possible. If these are given to him without refrigeration, can he get sick???

Robert, sorry for the delay answering your question. I guess you are asking your question meaning that if your father takes fish oil with NO refrigeration it could upset his stomach, that is the reason to refrigerate fish oil so it does not dissolve in the stomach but in the intestine.

Some people get upset stomach when they start to take fish oil, they get burps and the sensation that the oil remains in their stomach. Not everybody feels that. I believe, when a newcomer has a high omega 6 diet, that is a diet high in starches and processed foods, has more problems with fish oil at the beginning. But there are several ways to overcome that, first start slowly with one fish oil capsule a day until that is taken with no side effects. Then incorporate another fish oil capsule several days after and then the other( we recommend a minimum of 3.000 mg per day of fish oil).

Then, you have Enteric Coated Fish Oil Capsules that do not dissolve in the stomach. And finally, you have the possibility to try before or after meals, some people react better to one of these forms of supplementation.

But is very important you give your father the possibility of a better senility with fish oil and vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin D and fish oil are especially important as you get older, you should make sure your father has a vitamin D blood analysis and that he takes 10-20 minutes a day of sun everyday with at least 50% of his skin exposed (you should do that too).
