Stress Problem With Cat
by Gina
(San Francisco)
My long haired cat is continuously pulling out her fur!? She doesn't scratch as if she is itching. I have used pet shampoo for dandruff just incase. I feed her fish oil...but still she pulls out her fur. She does this .all day long. She should be bald by now! This has been going on for a year and a half. I think it might be something related to stress. Any ideas? Gina Answer: Sometimes cats get stress disorders. If you're not sure of the origin of this stress, you can pretty much count on the fact that something is bothering her and she needs some attention to correct this. There are over-the-counter medications to calm down your kitty that you can buy at pet supply centers This obviously is a problem that needs to be dealt with, and to delay is also not fair to the kitty. She is dealing with her problem in the best way she can, but it might not be good enough to resolve her problem. I think once she is relieved of this stressful situation, she will calm down and not be so abusive to her fur. Alfredo E. P.S. Omega 3 For My Cat
by Mary
(Miami)
I have a nice big cat. She has long hair and she likes all types of oils. I open fish oil capsules for her everyday but when I have lotion on my legs she starts liking my legs and the lotion bottles and stuff.
I keep her away from them as much as possible because I do not want her to get sick. We have a bottle of mineral oil for crafting and I caught her licking on that too! I think she craves oil. Would it be right to give her a capsule of fish oil everyday?
Mary
Answer:
Cats need Omega 3's in their diet and if they don't eat organic raw meat they don't get this. My boy's coat is lovely and soft, and I also brush him at least every other day.
You can get omega fatty acid supplement capsules from the vet if you like; they really help with making their coat shiny & reducing dandruff. They are specifically made for cats, I don't think your capsules would hurt her

Fish Oil For Cat Dosage Question
by Andrea
(San Francisco, CA, USA)
Siegfried Kitty loves fish oil
Hi. I have both a story and a question. I share space with a very active and very smart 1.5 year old short-haired "Tuxedo" cat--black with a white bib.
His name is Siegfried. He watches me take my vitamins every day, which includes 1000mg of Norwegian Cod Liver Oil, and he loves the sound of the pill bottle and the size of the pills.
One day, I dropped a Cod Liver capsule on the floor, and after he batted it around for a bit, he bit into it, realized the pure kitty satisfaction of yummy fish oil, and became an immediate and enthusiastic fish oil convert.
His normal diet is an organic, grain-free dry food that is over 50% protein, and contains 500mg/kg Omega-3 and 0.4% of total DHA + EPA.
My question is, how much Cod Liver oil should this 12 pound kitty consume?
Thanks.
Answer:
Hi Andrea. I believe Siegfried and Lola, my cat, have developed the same tastes and sharp ear for fish oil. I take several supplements every morning and she watches closely, when I arrive to the fish oil bottle she starts to “order” her daily dosage. I give her a 1.000 mg of fish oil every other day.
There is no established amount or fish oil dosage for cats, neither for humans. But I consider this to be a proper dosage. I also avoid feeding her dry foods, because I consider it is fake food in most cases.
Most of the omega 3 they announce in the label is nothing more than omega 3 from vegetable origin that is not bioavailable since it is in the ALA acid form. You need animal origin fish oil in order to be in the EPA and DHA acid form to be completely bioavalable. Please read, What is Omega 3
I live in Colombia where 100% of the cattle is grass fed, so I give her everyday high omega 3 meats, mainly liver.
Thanks for the nice photo.
Best wishes.
Alfredo E.

Low Carbohydrate Cat Food
by Guss
(North Carolina)
I have the idea to give my cat a low carbohydrate food I find in my grocery store. I want to feed her it but would like to know your opinion first.
Here are the ingredients: chicken meal, corn gluten meal, ground barley, soy protein isolate, ground corn, natural flavors, cellulose powder, chicken fat, brown rice, beet pulp, fish oil, vegetable oil, ground psyllium seed, potassium chloride, inulin, choline chloride, potassium citrate, taurine, green tea extract, sodium chloride.
Analysis is as follows: crude protein 44%, crude fat 10% moisture 8.5% carbohydrates: 12%.
Thanks.
Answer:
Cats were never meant to eat dry food, also known as cereals or kibble. We, humans, make them eat it for convenience to us. It has nothing to do with them or their nutritional needs. It's completely species inappropriate.
So in a home environment, your kitty does not get the moisture it needs from dry food and it’s almost always in a constant state of dehydration. Water fountains are encouraged to TRY to get your cat to drink more and your kitty may even enjoy it, but it will never meet its water intake needs drinking from a bowl.
Cats need dominantly protein in their diet, so that's good you want you're looking for. The best route I think would be to look up a few "holistic" type pet stores in your city, and do some research into the brands they carry. Usually stores geared toward a more organic/holistic market carry brands higher in raw proteins, less carbs, less by-product ingredients, etc, and you'll hopefully be able to narrow down your search that way.
There's also a new movement towards feeding a raw-food diet, I'm not sure what the merrits/pitfalls of this approach would be, however it would obviously allow you to feed your cat a high-protein diet :) So another thing to do some reading on if you're so inclined!
