Fish Oil Dosage For My Dogs

by Rosemary
(Adelaide Australia)

Hi. I have three senior dogs. 14 year old Schnauzer bitch(20 kg), 11 year old Schnauzer male(23 kg) and a 8.7 year old Border Collie x Kelpie male 34 kg & very overweight. All desexed.

The Border Collie X I have had for 2 months and am concerned about a very dry body coat which was clipped 6 weeks ago. How much liquid Fish Oil should I give these dogs for good health?

I do hope you can help.

Rosemary.

Answer:

Rosemary, the best diet you can give your dogs is a carnivore diet; their digestion is made for meat not for dry carbohydrates which is what they get when you feed them dry food. These dry foods produce all kinds of degenerative diseases and an early grave. Please read, Fish Oil for dogs.

There is no established fish oil dosage for human or dogs. It depends on the diet, age and health status. For example, if you feed your dog with dry food, basically omega 6 fats, you have to give him a higher omega 3 dosage than when you use meat because omega 6 fats counteract omega 3 benefits.

It is a matter of trial an error. You can start with one fish oil capsule a day, it contain 1.000 mg of fish oil or 300 mg of total omega 3 fats (EPA plus DHA from the label), and see if after a couple of weeks there is a positive change in his coat. Otherwise, increase the doses until you get the desired results. As I said, it may take a good amount of omega 3 depending on the diet.

Best wishes,
Alfredo E.
