Correct Fish Oil Dosage For Bipolar Disorder

by Susan
(USA)

Hi, I have a child 15 tears old with what I believe is bipolar disorder. I read that omega 3 has a positive impact in this disorder and would like to know what would be the fish oil dosage for him and if you recommend any other health changes that may be affecting him.

Thanks,

Susan.

Answer:

Hi Susan, when you want to combat something like bipolar disorder, or any other mental impairment, you have to look for the DHA content in the fish oil omega 3 you are taking.

Basically, there are 2 fatty acids in omega 3, EPA and DHA. EPA has anti-inflammatory benefits and DHA works on the nervous system improving the connections quality between brain cells. What it really does is to improve the quality of the brain function, that can be affected by a low omega 3 diet, or omega 3 deficiency.

There is no established amount of omega 3 fish oil for any health disorder. Nevertheless, in order to get the benefits omega 3 can bring, you need to take at least 3.000 mg of fish oil per day (equivalent to 900 mg of EPA plus DHA), if you are healthy and at your ideal weight. It is known fact that in order to avoid some disorders you should take higher amounts of fish oil.

For example, to lower your triglycerides levels you have to begin at 6.000 mg per day of fish oil, and lower you omega 6 ingestion( all grains, grain oils, bakery products, sweets, and in general all sugars) because omega 6 counteracts the omega 3 action. That is the key point….Your omega 6 ingestion affects the omega 3 available. That is why there could be no specific amount of omega 3 that can be said to act for a certain disorder. It all depends on your omega 6 load.

Another important factor is that for mental disorders you need high fish oil doses to feel any change, usually in the mega dosage side, 9.000 mg per day of fish oil (3.000mg of omega 3 fats). It is better to buy liquid fish oil than fish oil capsules, for this purpose, since there is over 1.000 mg of omega fats per teaspoonful. Therefore, to get faster results (in a month or so), I suggest you start with a high DHA omega 3, take 9.000 mg of fish oil and lower your omega 6 ingestion.

Do not minimize the importance of daily exercise for bipolar disorder or mental health. Most doctors do not recommend it very often because they do not do any exercise. Do 30 minutes a day of any exercise (do not do the same exercise everyday because this will make sure you quit in less than a month) that produces heavy breathing. It produces in your body the most powerful drug for mental health: endorphins, nothing like that.

Thanks,
Betty

Answer:
Hi Betty, There is no such a thing as a fish oil omega 3 dosage that fits everybody with bipolar disorder, you will have to find what works best for you. Let me explain…

when you want to combat something like bipolar disorder, or any other mental impairment, you have to look for the DHA content in the fish oil omega 3 you are taking.

Basically, there are 2 fatty acids in omega 3, EPA and DHA. EPA has anti-inflammatory benefits and DHA works on the nervous system improving the connections quality between brain cells. For example, to lower your triglycerides levels you have to star at 6.000 mg per day, and lower you omega 6 ingestion( all grains, grain oils, bakery products, sweets, and in general all sugars) because omega 6 counteracts the omega 3 action. That is the key point….Your omega 6 ingestion affects the omega 3 available.

Another important factor is that for mental disorders you need high fish oil doses to feel any change, usually in the mega dosage side, 9.000 mg per day of fish oil (3.000mg of omega 3 fats). Do 30 minutes a day of any exercise (do not do the same exercise everyday because this will make sure you quite in less than a month) that produces heavy breathing It produces in your body the most powerful drug for mental health: endorphins, nothing like that.

I hope I was clear in my explanation.

Omega 3 Fish Oil In Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

by Masa
(Hong Kong)

Hello.I am fighting some obsessive thoughts and always feeling insecure of some believes so I keep asking and wondering some questions, which I noted that it should be one of the symptoms of anxiety and depression.

I was told to take fish oil rich in EFA to improve the condition. Can you please explain how Omega 3 helps and what is the effective dose for my condition? Thanks!

Answer:

Hi Masa. Fish oil is the raw material of the brain and all the nervous system, as protein is to muscles. The brain cells connections are made using DHA, one of the components of fish oil and omega 3, the other is EPA. When we don´t supply these omega 3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, those brain cell connections have to be made using some other fat, whatever fat you eat. In this case, the brain has a tendency to form faulty brain cells connections.

If you supply enough fish oil to your body, at least 3.000 mg per day (equivalent to 900 mg of omega 3 fatty acids, EPA plus DHA), if you are perfectly healthy and more if you are overweight or with some other disease, your brain with be operating at its fullest capacity. It does not necessarily means that you are in paradise, you will be in an imperfect world where you are under constant stress but at least your brain will be working under optimal conditions.

We are all obsessive and insecure to a certain degree; some of us are more susceptible than others. I suggest you don’t accept the label that you are obsessive but that you are acting in some instances as obsessive, but you can always change.

All these conducts are exacerbated under enough pressure (Waldo Emerson said: “There is a crack under every rock”, meaning that anyone would show their crack under enough stress. What I would do, if I were in your shoes, is to introduce play, pleasure, satisfaction to all areas of your life to compensate those moments of rigor and stress we all have to go thru every day in life.

If I were you, I would begin by imitating the life of the athlete, with discipline. The first step for this is to make a sacred hour for you, every day. You can start to do some play in that hour, first do 20-30 minutes of intense exercise, one that makes you sweat a lot, then read, hear or play music, whatever you like.

Then change your diet to a diet that favors health and stable blood sugar, the diet of an athlete. That diet is the diet we have our digestion made for after millions of years of evolution, before we created agriculture, rich in vegetables, fruits, nuts, good fats, all proteins, eggs, and dairy. No starches or foods that come from factories, like all processed foods, sugars, grain oils, sodas, margarines, etc. Starches and sugars favor blood sugar swings that produce mood changes.

Please, take your health in your own hands, be responsible for it, don´t leave it to your doctor or anybody else. The first step in this direction is to introduce healthy habits that favor health. Read, read and read more, it is your life.

Let us all know if you achieve any positive changes.

Please, read Fish Oil and Nourishment

My Best wishes,

Alfredo E.

Omega 3.6.9 Combined Supplements For The Mind

by Jacobs
(USA)

A week ago I was reading some stuff on omega 3, and it suggested to buy fish oil supplements for aid on anxiety and cognitive skills. So, I was about to purchase Omega 3 until I saw something that said I must have balanced chemicals from omega 3 6 and 9 so I decided to buy the 3.6.9 complete

Now my question remains, is it safe for my age (16) to take 2 pills of omega 3 6 9 per day as suggested? And do I take it with food or on its own ?

Thanks.

Answer:

There is a common misunderstanding about fatty acids and omega 3,6,9. One thing is to say that all our body cells need omega 3 , omega 6 and omega 9, in order to operate correctly, and something very different is to say that we all should be supplementing with omega 3,6 and 9.

Let me explain that our ideal omega 6/ omega 3 should be close to 1/1. Human being evolved for millions of years with a diet with that ratio. But that was before agriculture was discovered. With modern agriculture and mass production of cereals and grains cheap products are always presents in our diets, making the actual omega 6/ omega 3 ratio close to 20/1.

This means that we already have too much omega 6, the same with omega 9, so why should we buy a supplement we already have too much of?. We would be doing more harm to our body.

Buy only omega 3 supplements, try to take at least 3 grams per day ( what the American Heart Association recommends). It can be done at any time during the day, either before of after meals.

My best to you,

Alfredo E.
