10 Year Old Grandson Craves Salmon Oil Capsules

I buy Vital Choice 1000 mg salmon oil caps. My grandson craves them and loves to chew them up.
I have limited him to 3- 1,000 mg caps a day. He would eat more if we let him.
He seems quite healthy but I am wondering if I should get the 600 mg for him? Do you know if it is an ok amount?

Pam: you don´t have to worry about your grandson taking too much omega 3, even if he takes the whole bottle nothing will happen to him besides some stomach pain or discomfort. Omega 3 is an essential oil not a medicine and as such he will have the same problems if he ate too much butter or any other food.
The minimum dosage of omega 3 for his age is around 600 mg of omega 3 fatty acids per day which may be close to 2.000 mg of common fish oil (It depends on the amount of EPA plus DHA that your salmon oil has. Check the label).

Omega 3 Dosage For ADHD Kid

JO: first, keep in mind you should buy a good quality fish oil. That means molecularly distilled fish oil. Second, this is not rocket science; you have to find the right dosage for your kid. With this type of disorders you have to use high fish oil dosages.
For example, you could start with 1.000 mg per day of omega 3 fatty acids, that is EPA plus DHA( you can find the amount per capsule or per spoonful on the label) which would be equivalent to about 3.000 mg of fish oil (again, check the label to see how much fish oil/ omega 3).
If you don´t see changes in his conduct, you can increase his omega 3 dosage every 2 or 3 weeks.
Remember that in order to see better improvements you should change eating and exercise or play( he needs a lot of play outside, the sun produces vitamin D that is very important for his brain) habits.

Hello, Juvenil Idiopathic Arthritis, like many autoimmune disorders is related to diet, especially to pro-inflammatory diets like the diets most westerners use. This pro-inflammatory diets are composed mainly of omega 6 fats found in grains and grain oils. Anything that has omega 6 is going to aggravate your child’s condition. On the other side, anything that contributes to reduce inflammation helps her: daily exercise, anti-inflammation foods and omega 3.
Now, regarding omega 3 dosage for a 5 years old child, I suggest 1.000 mg per day of fish oil (300 mg of omega 3 fats, EPA plus DHA) until 8 or 9 years of age. But in this case, you will need to increase the dose until you see some improvement. For example, start using 3.000 mg of fish oil for a few weeks (it will be easier to swallow if you avoid big capsules, with liquid fish oil) and increase it according to results.
There is not exact amount of omega 3 since the amounts your child assimilates varies according to other omega 6s in her diet, they both fight for the same enzymes. So, you will have to keep an eye on her diet, no sweets or sugars (remember, all carbohydrates are sugars).

Cod liver oil dosage for baby
Hello. What is the recommended dosage of Cod Liver Oil for a healthy 1 year old baby? I have heard that vitamins A and D accumulate in the body; therefore, I do not want to overdose my baby. I am only interested in giving her DHA and EPA.

Hi Sara, the recommended dosage from 0 to 8 years is 300 mg per day of omega 3 fats. That is, the EPA plus DHA content of the fish oil you are using. The label of the liquid fish oil usually has the amount of EPA and DHA per spoonful of fish oil. If it does not indicates the amounts of EPA and DHA do not use it because it may be a cheap low quality product.
From 8 to 15 years old I recommend 600 mg of omega 3 fats, which usually means 2.000 mg per day of fish oil.
Now, if you prefer to use cod liver oil there is no problem, it could be an advantage if you live in a place where there is not much sun during some months of the year. Always remember the importance of getting 10 -15 minutes of sun every day, it provides the necessary vitamin D for optimal brain development.
Do not forget that when we talk about children, it is especially important to provide them with a product free of contaminants their bodies could be susceptible to traces of different metals like mercury. Please, buy a fish oil that indicates it is molecularly distilled.
