Fish Oil Dogs: Is Fish Oil the Same as Omega 3 and Omega 6?
Question:
Fish Oil Dogs. I currently give my dog Derm Caps from Drs. Foster and Smith. Derm Caps are basically just Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils.
I use it as a supplement for shedding. It works really well but it's kind of expensive. I was wondering if you could tell me if buying Fish Oil from someplace like Costco would be equivalent and would work the same. It's so much cheaper at Costco, so I'd like to get it there if it's going to do the same thing. What do you think? By Azcanchi... Answer Fish Oil Dogs. It is very simple. Fish oil has a high omega 3 fat content (EPA and DHA are the omega 3 fats you are looking for). A 1.000 mg capsule of fish oil usually has 180 mg of EPA and 120 DHA( total 300 mg of omega 3 fats). Different fish oils have different omega 3 content, look for it in the bottle. Dry pet food manufacturers claim everything our animals need is inside that attractive bag with their beautiful pictures of meats, vegetables and fruits, labelled "natural!" This would be great, but it's impossible to make such claims. No matter how good the ingredients are in a bag of dog or cat food, it is still a highly processed, grain-based food, lacking in live and whole nutrients. Just a big bag of dead omega 6 fatty acids. Manufactured dry dog foods do not provide the nutrients our dogs need and thus cause malnutrition; commercial foods also contain toxins that are over-burdening their bodies and compromising their immune systems so they fall prey to disease. Some dry food have, according to their claim, omega 3 essential fatty acids for dogs. Flax, flax seeds and flax seed oil they all have Alpha-linolenic Acid, ALA. They can all be converted to EPA and DHA, the form of omega 3 the body uses. When you buy milled flax seeds at the supermarket, you should be aware that the oxygen in the air reacts within minutes with the milled flax seeds making it useless, from the fatty acid health point of view. You would have to mill it and consume it on the spot in order to avoid oxidation.
Now, it can easily be understood why when you buy that dry pet food saying it is rich in omega 3 fatty acids , is just BS. Omega 3 fatty acids in the form of EPA or DHA only last hours at room temperatures before they go rancid. So, maybe it contains some form of milled flax seeds that probably is death from the health stand point. On top of that, all cats and many dogs don´t have the enzymes to convert ALA to EPA and DHA.
The reason we have to supplement with omega 3( Fish Oil Dogs) is that our usual 21st century food has 20 to 50 times less omega 3(these are anti inflammatory fats) that what we need. Our food is overloaded with omega 6( pro inflammatory fats), these are the fats we want to avoid, even in the dogs food that is made out of grains( omega 6) instead of meat( omega 3, his natural diet)
So, when you take an omega 3 6 supplement (or give it to a dog) you are worsening your inflammation (accelerated aging) problem.
Don´t worry, give those cheap Cosco omega 3 caps (they love it) to your dog and take them yourself. You can give him 300-600 mg of omega 3 fats and you can take 900 mg (close to 3.000 mg fish oil) daily.Fish Oil Gods.
The best for you.
