Omega 3 For Autistic Child
by sarah
(valley village, ca, usa)
Hi, Im curious. My son is autistic. I breastfed and really never had fish or supplement. He has hard trouble concentrating. I bought the omega 3 gummy fish vitamins. Is that good? I stored them in my cabinet. Im afraid they aren’t good and they had to be in the fridge. I haven’t started him on them yet, but am going to soon.
Should I buy new ones? Also, will update on what happens after he takes them for 3 months.
Thanks.
Answer:
Hi Sarah. I am afraid the Omega 3 Gummy Fish are not going to do any good to your child. They are only some omega 3 from vegetable origin (not usable by humans) coated with sugar (terrible for the immune system of the baby).
You should use omega 3 from animal origin, with EPA and DHA as fatty acids, in order to make sure it offers the necessary bio availability. Be sure you buy a molecularly distilled fish oil, liquid or in capsules, and use a dosage of 300 mg omega 3 fatty acids (EPA plus DHA) per day, equivalent to close to 1.000 mg of fish oil.
If you buy the liquid fish oil, it should be kept in the fridge, once you open the bottle.

My best regards, Alfredo E.

Fish Oil And Vision Problems
by Kimberly
(New Bedford MA)
Fish oil and vision
Hi. My child has a very poor diet and I have tried in vain to get her to eat better, she has had some vision problems and I can’t help but wonder if it is due to her poor diet. She eats a lot of high fat foods, I have been giving her a multi vitamin and started giving her omega fish oils.
Do you think this could help her and how much should I give her, she is also moody and loses her temper a lot.
Thanks
Kimberly.
Answer.
The best diet for a child, or adult, is a diet with fruits, vegetables, proteins and “good” fats. Especially important is to avoid ALL processed foods, like sugars, sodas, crackers, breads, cookies, bakery products, vegetable oils (hydrogenated oils), margarines, etc. Please, read Omega 3 And Diet.
Our eyes operation is part of the nervous system. It requires a high omega 3 level of fats that have to be supplied in our diet or it could produce faulty connections between brain cells. That is why, it is extremely important to take fish oil omega 3 during childhood. I believe a lot of her problems could be corrected with a better diet and fish oil supplementation.
Now, it is your problem as her mother to establish discipline in all areas, but if you buy junk food and keep it in the house, you are causing the problem. Do not buy any of that food, it will benefit your child and the rest of the family.
Regarding the fish oil dosage, it depends of her age. Up to 8 years of age, I suggest 1.000 mg per day of fish oil (equal to 300 mg of omega 3 fats, EPA plus DHA from the label), from 9-15 years, take 2.000 mg per day of fish oil, and from then on 3.000 mg. Those dosages are for people with normal weight and no health problems. If your child still shows moods swings, you may have to double those amounts.
Make sure she is sleeping 9 hours per night, playing in the sun (vitamin D is essential for her brain) and exercising every day (again, you need to exercise authority to regulate TV and computer times). Without assertive authority she will always be aggressive and dominant, they need limits.

Children, Fish Oil And Dry Skin
by Amy
(Minnesota)
I have heard that fish oil is beneficial for dry skin. Is this true? If so, is it safe for kids?
Answer:
Hello Amy. Yes, fish oil is beneficial for the skin, hair and nails. As a matter of fact, they are the first to show the benefits of taking fish oil. Please, read Fish Oil and hair
And, yes, it is safe for kids to take fish oil. You just have to be careful to buy a high quality fish oil, like the molecularly distiled fish oil we offer here, when you are dealing with kids.
The dosage we recommend is 300 mg per day of omega 3 fatty acids (EPA plus DHA from the bottle you are using) up to 8 years of age. 600 mg of omega 3 fats from 9 to 15 years old and 900 mg from 16 years old ( close to 3.000 mg per day of fish oil, the adult dosage too).
Please, read Omega 3 Fatty acids and Children

Child and Omega 3
by Elana
(Israel)
High Omega 3 diet
Hi, this is a story and question. My 7 yr old has had behavioral problems since he was a toddler. At age 5 I started to give him flax seed and saw a marked behavioral improvement for a month. And then it stopped.
At age 7 I started giving him Omega 3 capsules (fish oil), 1 mg a day and have had a marked improvement in his behavior but he is still very dreamy and somewhat impulsive. Will more fish oil or adding flax help that? Any experience? Thanks
Answer:
Hi Elana, He may have marked improvement in behavior, you never know. You see, the response to the proper amounts of omega 3 is an individual matter and depends on many factors. Things like the amounts of omega 6 he ingest in his diet may affect the quantities of omega 3 that really reach his brain since both fatty acids fight for the same enzyme to be assimilated.
That is also why I always recommend a low omega 6 diet along with high amounts of omega 3 in order to see changes in conduct. A low omega 6 diet mainly means no grains, or grain derived foos, like breads, pasta, cakes, sugar, candies, sodas, etc. No more processed foods, either. You could offer fruits, vegebales, all proteins, “good fats” ( no grain oils, either). Please, read Sugar Effects
How high in the fish should you go? It depends on what you see in conduct changes. I would suggest you increase the amounts of fish oil to 2 grams per day. If you see an improvement, increase it to 3.000 mg and see if there are more changes. The changes may take some time, usually 2 to 3 months, you will have to be patient.
Always make a thyroid panel check when there are behavioral disorders, it is very important. Do provide for MANY outside, on the sun for vitamin D assimilation, hours of play, the mind needs the physical exertion to be calm and ready for mental action.
