"you may add one more fish oil capsule every other day"

fish oil and vitamins interactions Question

Fish Oil Vitamin. I am a 52 year old menopausal woman who is lean and in good health. My doctor has advised I take calcium, vitamin D and vitamin B-12 supplements.

Can I take these with the Fish oil capsules or should they be taken on their own? Please advise.

Hi Barb:

Fish Oil Vitamin. Congratulations for keeping lean and in good health at 52 years of age. I hope that you do some kind of exercise to keep yourself fit. Many doctors tend to forget the importance of exercise for themselves and for their patients. It will improve not only your overall health but specially your mental health, which is so important.

Regarding your question about taking fish oil with your other supplements, I believe there is no problem in doing that. I personally do so. Specially if you are taking fat soluble vitamins with your fish oil, you need fat in your stomach to assimilate them.

If this is your first time taking fish oil, just remember that it may take you some time to get used to it, so you may start by adding one fish oil capsule every other day. Some people prefer to take the fish oil capsules before meals others believe they may avoid the burps by having the fish oil after meals.

When purchasing an omega 3 fatty acid supplement, remember that these oils are highly sensitive to damage from heat, light and oxygen. Choose a certified organic product that has been refrigerated and is packaged in a dark brown or green glass jar and be sure to store the product in your refrigerator or freezer.

You have to take small steps in order to get your body used to fish oil.

My suggestions:

1-Start with 1 capsule of 1.000 mg a day with empty stomach. If after 3 -5 days things are not going well try it AFTER you have eaten.

2- Once your stomach accepts 1 capsule add the 2nd and 3rd, etc one day after the next.

3-If you don’t get off first base, try a different brand of fish oil.

Fish oil burp:

Try different times of the day, before and after meals. It could also be an indication that the oil you are taking could be rancid. Or it may disappear after a few days. Last, try freezing the caps, this way they don“t dissolve in your stomach but in your intestine.

One final idea, try enteric-coated fish capsules. That should do it.

Regarding fish oil dosage, I recommend 3.000 mg of fish oil per day, equivalent to 900 mgs of omega 3 fats (EPA plus DHA, if you are at your ideal weight with no health disorders, 6.000 mg of fish oil per day if you are overweight or with a degenerative disease like hypertension, high triglycerides, etc. Please, read Omega 3 Dosage

My best to you,

Alfredo E.

One Essential nutrient may be completely missing from our diets today, omega 3 fats. Omega 3 fats are essential for our hearts, minds and entire body. In fact, every cell of our organism needs omega 3 to work at its prime.

For the last 30 years, hundreds of clinical studies have documented the benefits of omega 3 fish oil. Even the conservative American Heart Association (AHA) recommends it for people with risks of cardiovascular disease.

The situation is that it is difficult to get the proper amounts of fish oil without risking dangerous contamination, if you want to take it from your diet.

As an answer to that need, we offer molecularly distilled fish oil that comes from deep water fish, Hoki, a deep sea fish naturally high in DHA and unique to New Zealand. The oil is refined through extensive molecular distillation processes to remove any form of contamination. Click here to learn more .
