Fish oil and Flaxseeds oil

Hi, I am a teenager that likes to exercise and take good acre of my body. I usually take flaxseeds oil everyday but a friend told me that I need the fish oil. What do you recommend, both, either one of them?

John

Answer:

John: the reason to take a supplement of omega 3 fats is that modern diets have 20 times less omega 3 fats than the amount our body needs to stay healthy. We have evolved as animals that need a high omega 3 diet in order to have a balance in the omega 3 / omega 6 ratio.

Fish oil has omega 3 fats (fatty acids) as EPA and DHA acids. These are the main omega 3 fatty acids that the body can use and fish oil has those fatty acids. On the other hand, flaxseeds and flaxseeds oil has no EPA or DHA but ALA.

ALA is an omega 3 fatty acid of vegetable origin that the body can not use as such but has to convert to EPA and DHA. That conversion is barely 5-10% of the amount ingested and many people can not even convert any ALA.

You see what I mean? The best omega 3 is the fish oil because of its bioavailability.
