Time For Omega 3 To Work On Depression

by Mark

exercising for depression

exercising for depression

How long does it take for fish oil to work when it comes to easing depression?
I am bipolar, and am currently in a really bad depressive state. My psych told me to take Omega-3 Fish Oil in a very high dose, among other drugs. I'm wondering if it has an immediate effect, or if it works like anti-depressants and takes weeks to build up in the body and do anything?

My psychologist has given it to several of his patients with fantastic results. There have been many studies done - it does work for many people. I'm just wondering how long it takes to work

Mark

Answer:

Mark: It may take several weeks or even months. The idea is that the brain uses omega 3 to build connections between brain cells and this process may take several weeks to feel a difference. It depends not only on the amounts of omega 3 but also on the amounts of omega 6 (grains, grain oils, pasta, breads, and all carbohydrates have omega 6) you ingest.

These 2 fatty acids, omega 3 and omega 6, work in opposite ways in our cell chemistry. You not only should take omega 3 supplements but lower your omega 6 ingestion to feel a quicker and stronger omega 3 action.

You can read more at Omega 3 and the Brain

Another factor that may accelerate your recovery is EXERCISE. Doctors and non exercising persons underestimate the enormous benefits exercise has in the mind, specifically for depression. Exercise is a potent drug with fast and efficient action on depression but like any drug it has to be applied with the frequency and amounts necessary to show its benefits.

You are not going to feel any change in mood if every once in a while you go out for a short and slow walk. No, you have to go out everyday for at least 30 minutes of medium-high intensity exercise, that exercise that makes you breath heavily. This way your body will release into your brain the potent endorphins. I you do this, from the first day you will see a change in your feelings.

For more information read Exercise Benefits

and Fish Oil and Exercise

Last, if you use those exercising periods to receive the sun in at least 50% of your skin, you will get vitamin D, the last link we need to keep a good attitude in life. You see, vitamin D acts on the brain increasing the chemicals we need for a nice enthusiastic mood. This is also underestimated by the medical establishment because they have those potent synthetic drugs to make you dependent and buying for all your life. Medicine, more than anything has become a business.

Work on your health everyday, you have to earn it….. You don´t buy it at the drug store….. The first step to have a healthy mind is to have a healthy body, the body of an athlete.

Alfredo E.

Why Fish Oil For Depression

by Jean

depression

depression

My therapist, who is also a nurse, told me to use fish oil pills, along with my current medications, to help with depression. She suggested to take 400-800 mg of omega 3 fats a day. What do you say?

Thanks

Answer:

Several studies have demonstrated that people with lower omega 3 content in their blood have more depressions and the other way around, that the higher their omega 3 in blood better mood and general disposition.

There's still debate about ratios of EPA to DHA and just how the hell the Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids make a difference, but the truth is there haven't been enough studies to know one way or the other. It's cheaper to get more EPA than DHA because it probably comes out of the fish that way, and what little data there are indicate that you want more EPA than DHA anyway.

The fish oils (and it must be the fish oils, there are too much contradictory data on flaxseed oil) are promising as an add-on mood stabilizer to help lower dosages, and thus reduce side effects of more traditional medications. You need to take 3,000 to 5,000 mg a day of EPA and DHA combined. Not 3,000 to 5,000 mg of fish oil, that would be too easy, but of its "active ingredients." If you get some decent capsules, that's eight to ten capsules a day.

Omega-3s are really best as an add-on to whatever else you might be taking. You should not rely on them as your sole mood stabilizer. Initial dose is 3,000mg of combined EPA and DHA, however you manage to get that. Like any psychiatric medication it's best to work up to that dosage and not start at 3,000mg.

Look closely at the label to make sure you know how many capsules or teaspoons are involved to get how many milligrams of EPA and DHA. Can be taken with or without food, although many people find it easier on the tummy to take with food.

In depression several factors affect your moods, not only Omega 3. Pay special attention to exercise and its wonderfull effects on depression. Please read Omega 3 For Depression

Is Flax Seed Oil As Effective As Fish Oil With Depression?

by Y A
(Belice)

fish oil or flax seed for depression

fish oil or flax seed for depression

Hi:I have a mild depression that my doctor doesn't think is serious enough for antidepressants but should be treated, and she indicated taking fish oil everyday because apparently it's been helpful for teens who are mildly depressed.

The situation is that I am a vegan, so I don't want to take fish oil, especially since they come in gelatin capsules. I would like to take flax oil but I don't know if it is as effective.

Y.A.

Answer:

When you want to have an effect on a depression you normally have to take high omega 3 fats doses in order to feel some real benefit. Normally, above 6- 9.000 mg per day of fish oil. With lower doses you don’t feel major changes.

The problem with flax seed is that the body has to convert its omega 3 fatty acids from ALA into EPA and DHA in order to be useful for your organism. This conversion is very inefficient, around 5-10% which makes it impractical for our purpose. The same happens with all omega 3 fats from vegetable origin. It has to be from animal origin to have its fatty acids in the EPA and DHA form.

Your best bet if fish oil, you can take in liquid instead of capsule form if you don´t want the gelatin.

Don´t forget that exercise is often undervalue as a tool for depression by non exercising doctors. Exercise is a drug that if you apply with proper frequency and dosage can have amazing effects on depression. Also, there is a link between high carbohydrates-highly processed diets, that are addictive, with mood changes.

Suggestions To Deal With Depression Without Anti-depressants

by Emma
(Nevada)

Normally people would tell me to have a balance diet, take omega-3 supplement, and exercise regularly would help alleviating my depression, which I have followed for the past years.

I don't drink and I used to take St. John's Wort and also SAM-e. But lately all of them haven’t really worked for me. I'm still scarred to try antidepressant meds so if you know other alternative, please let me know.

Thanks.

Answer:

Emma: I have to add my 2 cents, here. I would say, you are doing what you need to do; but the this is how you do it.

You are right to mistrust antidepressants and doctors; they cover some of the symptoms in exchange for dependency on them. You are lost in their hands, forever dependant. I see you don’t want to do that and I congratulate you because it is the easy way out.

Here is my opinion. Exercise produces the most potent drug available to human: endorphins. These are produced in the body ONLY after 30 minutes of medium-high intensity exercise (not exactly window watching).

If you do a low intensity exercise you will not get the benefits exercise has to offer here. For example, if you walk-run you can walk or jog a block then run 1 minute at a high intensity and then walk until you get your breath back. These intervals create the perfect set up for Human Growth Hormone (HGH) and endorphin’s release.

Exercise is a potent drug that you have to take daily, it can not be accumulated and you have to take it at the proper dosage (at least 30 minutes) and intensity (medium-high), otherwise, like any drug, it won’t do any good.

Sun light. This is the best supplement you can get and it is free, vitamin D. Very important for depression, especially during the winter. You should take the sunlight everyday for 20 minutes, avoiding long exposures that produce sunburn (cancer), without sun blocking (more cancer). Hopefully, you can do both exercise and sun taking at the same time

Omega 3, the best for good mood. Make sure you are taking it in the amounts and quality necessary. During the winter switch to cod liver oil that has vitamin D

Last, your diet. A high omega 6 diet, with grains, grain oils, sugars, and all types of carbohydrates, will not only accelerates your aging but affects your mood. Carbohydrates are addictive and produce mood swings that can be avoided with a Paleolithic Diet
(high in omega 3, protein, fruits and vegetables). Also read Run from High Blood Sugar

Off course, some people would rather take drugs for depression and stay all day on the sofa.

Good luck.

Alfredo E

Omega 3, Depression And Healthy Habits

Fish oil an ddepression

Fish oil an ddepression

Hi. I have been doing some research on fish oils and its omega-3 fatty acids and their effectiveness of its components DHA and EPA in fighting depression.

According to a team of British researchers who did research on both anger management and depression with fish oils, the component EPA was the most vital component and it seems as though it was extracted from the fish oil and given to the subjects separately without its complement in fish oils DHA for the study on depression only.

The subjects in the anger management group were given five fish oil capsules daily providing a total of 2250 mg/day of EPA and 500 mg of DHA and as a result showed remarkable improvement with anger scores dropping 50% or more.

The subjects treated for depression were composed of three different groups receiving 1 gram, 2 grams and 4 grams of EPA or EEP extract of fish oil. According to the British researchers who were conducting the study, the group that received just one gram of EPA had the best improvements for depression of 50% or better. The subjects who received 2 or more grams of the EPA or EEP extract daily showed substantially less improvement.

The question that I would like to ask you is, how much EPA and EEP do fish oil tablets generally contain? I am attempting to treat moderate depression with just fish oils and some other supplements.

Thanks.

Answer:

Brian. The optimal amounts of omega 3 fats to treat depression or any other disorder has not been established. You see, it is almost impossible to predict how much of the omega 3 you take is actually going into your system because omega 3 and omega 6 fats fight for the same enzymes for assimilation.

If your diet is high in omega 6, like the diets of 90% of the population, you are going to need more omega 3 to compensate the omega 6s. That is why if you read our Omega 3 Diet, you will notice our advice regarding what foods to avoid.

Regarding depression, we believe there are times where depression is a fact of life difficult to avoid for any person, for example when we have an irreparable loss. The problem is when depression stays for no reason for periods of time. It probably is your body telling you are falling short in your duties with your body. What duties are those?

The minimum duties with your body are basically food and exercise habits. We tend to get depressed when we follow a low omega 3 diet and don´t exercise every day. You see, our body is made, through millions of year of evolution, to move fast and exercise for its survival, otherwise we would not eat and be eaten.

When all the exercise you do during a day is to sit at a desk for 10 hours and then go home to watch tv, you get all that nervous energy trapped in your system. If on top of that, you have a high omega 6 diet, your blood sugar is at high levels, creating more anxiety and depression. Please, read more Exercise, We Have It in Our Genes

Now, omega 3 fats come into this picture optimizing your brain function, making better brain cells connections. How is that possible? The brain is basically fat but not any fat, 60% of that fat is omega 3 fat. If you have a high omega 6 fat diet, your body has no way to make those connections with omega 3 so it makes faulty connections with the fats available in your diet. Those connections make you prone to bad memory, mood swings, and some other brain disorders.

Please, read Omega 3 Fish Oil For Depression

Brian, please, let us know how your health improves.

Best wishes

Alfredo E.

Cod Liver Oil and Antidepressants

by Abdullah
(Saudi Arabia)

Hello, do cod liver oil and anti depressants can be taken at same time ?

Thanks for your help

Answer:

Hi Abdullah. Yes, cod liver oil or any omega 3 oil can be taken with any antidepressant. No problem, cod liver oil has omega 3 fats that are part of our “essential” diet. That is, you can take omega 3 with anything, it is the same if you asked me if you can have butter or any other food with antidepressants.

Omega 3 fats are not a drug, they are part of some fats that our body need in other to operate at its maximum potential and are present in smaller than needed quantities. That is why close to 90% of the population is omega 3 deficient and we should supplement with a good quality fish oil.

Beware that many of the cod liver oils you find in the market are very low quality; you need an oil that says in the label MOLECULARLY DISTILLED. If it does not say it, don’t buy it.

Please read, Omega 3 Deficiency

Safe Doses of Fish Oil For Depression

by Fred

Hi. How many fish oil capsules is it safe to have a day?I have depression and heard that these help with it. So I want to have as many as is safe to have a day. Thank you so much for your answers.

By Fred

Answer:

Fred. You can't overdose on fish oil, it's just a food, or better, it is an essential fat. However, fish are pretty high up the food chain so they tend to bio accumulate a lot of mercury and pesticides. So, if you're going to be taking large amounts of fish oil, make sure to find a brand which is purified by molecular distillation to remove these toxins, like the one we offer in our Omega 3 Store
….

Usually, mood and mind disorders require large doses of fish oil, mega doses. I have heard of up to 20.000 mg per day… Normally, you scan start taking 6.000 mgs for 15-30 days and wait to see the effects. Also, you have to be patient, it may require up to 2 months to feel the full effects of balancing you omega 6/ omega 3 ratio. It is important to lower you omega 6 ingestion in order to have an overall higher omega 3 in your system. Please, read Omega 3 for Depression
and Nourishment

If you want to face depression the natural way , I would recommend two things: -Have a thyroid profile done. Many mind problems occur when there is an unbalance in this important gland. Make sure your TSH is under 2.0 (the ideal), not under 4.0, as some doctors recommend.

-Remember to exercise at least 30 minutes a day at a medium-high intensity. Exercise is a powerful drug for the mind and the rest of the body, but it has to be applied at the right frequency (everyday, if you have mood problems) and at the exact dosage (high intensity exercise liberates enough amounts of endorphins and HGH to affect your mood). Please read Benefits of Exercise
and Exercise, we have it in our genes

My best for you.

Return of Depression

by Yucky
(Achair, AR)

Hi, I started taking omega 3 fish oil 3 months ago. I had been depression free for a year. My depression has returned and I am having an almost daily migraine. I only take 1 per day.

Answer:

Hello Yucky. If you take your time and read some of the others “Omega 3 and the Mind Questions” you will see several points. First, the dosage is usually in the mega dose side, that is 6.000 – 12.000 mg of fish oil per day.You will have to find out what is the dose that works for you.

Second, fish oil is just one of the tools you have to use in your fight against depression. You will also need the help of a potent drug called exercise and a change in eating habits. High intensity exercise (it releases potent chemicals in your brain, doctors don’t tell their patients) and a sugar and starch free diet (paleo diet)

Fish Oil Omega 3, Prozac and More

by sandy
(Indiana)

Fish oil, Prozac and more

Fish oil, Prozac and more

Hi. Is fish oil omega 3 ok with Prozac?? I am depressed, taking fish oil with Prozac for 6 weeks, still do not have control of depression, any ideas?

Thanks.

Answer:

As you know, all medicaments have side effects but when you begin taking drugs like Prozac you may also give up something that could be more important, your independence.

You may begin to depend not only on the drug but on the doctor who is prescribing it. You put your wellbeing control on things outside yourself, you lose independence. That sounds as an anathema but it is real.

If I were you, I would only resort to something like Prozac as the last option, once I am sure I am doing everything in my hands to accomplish my responsibilities with my body. I believe that in order to have a sound mind you need first to a healthy body.

Your responsibilities with your body are in three different areas.

1-Exercise. Our bodies have evolved for millions of years depending upon the abilities to kill or be killed, we had to be ready to act in seconds for our life. If we were in bad physical shape we could not eat anything, we would die fast. We were perfect athletes....

If we translate that to the body in the XXI century with 10-12 hours per day of desk/television, we have a better idea the amount of stress we are putting in our body with inactivity. The body is made to exercise every day, more important, your mind needs the peaceful effects of the hormones released during exercise, endorphins, to feel good (that beautiful feeling of satisfaction you sense in every part of your body after 30-40 minutes of intense exercise). It does not matter if you are 3 or 70 years old, you need to exercise.

2-Food. Your body needs real food, by that I mean to eat zero of the processed foods we normally take as “food” but that unbalance all our systems (neurological, cardiovascular, etc). Those foods that come from a factory are no real foods, but processed. They are empty of nutrients and full of toxic components that poison our body and mind. If I were in your case, I would study how to change my eating habits. I would avoid, sugars, sweets, breads, vegetable oils, farm factory meats, eggs, etc. I would start eating raw fruits, vegetables, grassfed meats, milk, etc.

3-Myself. I would start by reserving an hour a day to do whatever I please, even if that means doing nothing, walking, dancing, reading, learning to paint or whatever you want. I would not touch that hour a day for myself. Maybe you could start a dairy.

If after following the above regimen for several months you sense of self worth and well being have not changed, maybe, only maybe, I would begin to put my life in the hands of somebody else.

Last, yes fish oil is a great natural product your mind needs for the electrical connections between your brain cells. If you have a low omega 3 diet, like 90% of the population of the western hemisphere, your brain connections and brains function is not optimal.

You should supplement with at least 6.000 mg per day of fish oil, close to 1.800 mg of omega 3 fats (EPA plus DHA from the label) to start feeling some results. Lower doses normally do not work to improve your mood. Maybe you will need to go as far as 10 grams a day of fish oil.

Sorry for the long email. I know that 90% of the people would rather take the Prozac and stay in the sofa than changing all those habits, but maybe, just maybe, you are in the 10% that may fight your situation.
