Omega 3 and ADHD, ADD Child Question:

Omega 3 and ADHD. What dose is best for add/adhd? My children are 9 and 11 and almost 100lbs each. I am giving straight fish oil. I have read a lot about the comb fish oils what do the studies suggest?

Answer:

Hello Cathy:

Sorry about the delay.

Usually, high amounts of omega 3 are taken for ADD/ADHD. In the neighborhood of 10 grams per day. This is difficult to swallow(10 capsules), specially if you are a child. An easier proposition is liquid fish oil. With about 2 or 3 spoonfuls is enough.

I would recommend that you start to watch their omega 6 consumption, sugars, sodas, bread, cookies, vegetables oils, etc, since their omega 3 assimilation depends upon their omega 6 ingestion(omega 6 and omega 3 fight for the same enzyme for digestion, see What is Omega 3 ). You could give them raw fruits and vegetables, it is very healthy.

Probably, we could easily understand the mechanism by means of which cells work with Omega 6 and Omega 3 fats, with the following example:

All body cells have a membrane. Each membrane is mainly made of essential fats, or essential fatty acids, Omega 6 and Omega 3. If the membrane has too much Omega 6 it becomes hard, viscous and there are problems for the food, energy and hormone transfer.

When Omega 3 is sufficient the membrane is thinner, less viscous, more elastic, less inflamed. Too much 3 Omega and the membrane “drips”. Too much Omega 6 and is clogged. It has been established that the appropriate Omega 6/Omega 3 ratio is near 1:1. In our modern life this ratio has changed to around 20:1, and some times up to 50:1. We eat too much Omega 6.

If we eat too much Omega 6, our cellular membranes are heavy, inelastic and the cellular function is slow. The body must do more work to feed itself and to remove toxins.

Tissues are plugged up and they become inflamed. Inflammation is the main symptom of many diseases, from mental and mood problems, heart disease , arthritis, allergies and the list goes on and on.

You could start with one spoonful of fish oil and a reduced omega 6 diet. Lots of outside activities (Short and controlled amount of TV). Watch their reaction and adjust their omega 3 accordingly.Omega 3 and ADHD

Remember only use omega 3, not omega 3-6-9 suplements.
