Does Fish Oil Dissolves Cholesterol?
by Fred
(USA)
Does the fish oil's ability in dissolving styrofoam cup correlates to its ability in dissolving cholesterol once it gets into your system and its quality? I have seen some fish oil demonstration that dissolves a styrofoam cup and some aren't.
I was explained that the molecular structure of styrofoam is similar to that of cholesterol. That's why the demonstration is performed. Is it a known scientific fact or just people trying to do a show?
Thanks.
Answer:
I don’t know about the Styrofoam but I can certainly tell you that fish oil does not dissolve cholesterol. Actually, when you start taking fish oil your total cholesterol remains very stable. What really changes is your lipid profile, meaning that your HDL cholesterol will go up (good cholesterol) and your triglycerides will come down.
These 2 parameters are the most important cardiovascular health predictors, contrary to what some doctors will make you believe (that Total and LDL cholesterol are the important numbers to come down. Then, they start feeding you cholesterol pills). Close to 50% of cardiovascular deaths are people with normal range total cholesterol(less than 200).
So, the problem is not to dissolve cholesterol but to have a healthier profile. Add exercise to omega 3 and your numbers will be in the ideal range.

On Statins and Fish oil For High Cholesterol
by Billy Lee
(USA)
Hi,I have high cholesterol and am on Vitorin 10/40. I see so many fish oils products(6/3 ratio) omega 3-6-9 etc...
How do I know which is the best for me? Thanks.
Answer:
Hi Billy: The reason to take fish oil supplements is that our omega 3 ingestion on western modern diets is 20 to 50 times less that what our body needs to stay healthy. You see, omega 3 is an ESSENTIAL fatty acid that can not be produced by the body and has to come from an outside source.
Besides, the same western diets are saturated in omega 6 fatty acids, always present in all grains and grain oils. That is the real problem, saturation of omega 6 and too low omega 3. So, if you are supplementing with more omega 6 and omega 9, you are doing more harm and unbalancing of the natural fatty equilibrium.
You can find more information at What is Omega 3 Section
Now, regarding Vitorin and all other statins to lower cholesterol, I would say that you could do some reading regarding the dangers of these drugs at Dr Mercola.com.
You could also start taking fish oil to protect your cardiovascular system. It would not lower cholesterol (actually, cholesterol is a substance the body needs to protect itself from chronic inflammation) it will improve your cholesterol profile by lowering your triglycerides ( should be below 100) and increasing your HDL cholesterol ( good cholesterol, should be above 60). You can read more at Triglycerides
Last, you have tremendous tool to fight chronic inflammation, it is called exercise. It is probably the best thing you can do for your body. Read more why we need exercise

High Cholesterol in Lady Not Eating Animal Products
by Cara-Beth
(Philadelphia)
Fish oil for heart
Hi.I'm 28 and was just informed by my doctor that my cholesterol levels are a bit high for my age and that I should cut down on eating animal products.
This kinda came as a curveball to me, because I eat minimal animal products and work out regularly. I am not very well informed on this topic.
Could you please find me some more resources on what someone my age can do in order to reduce their cholesterol, and on what kind of foods I should be eating and what kind of exercise I should do to fix the situation?
Thanks
Answer:
Hi Cara-Beth:
I see that you live in Philadelphia; I keep a beautiful memory of my 2 years there during the seventies. I now live in Medellin, Colombia.
Back to your questions....….First, the information medical doctors handle about cholesterol is somewhat distorted by slanted data from pharmaceutical industry. They would like to have cholesterol lowering drugs, statins, in drinking water so everybody take it. Reality is quite different. The truth is, cholesterol is very important to proper operation of every cell we have and it is part of a very sophisticated way to keep our hormones in balance.
That is why if you Google, statins side effects, you will see that many people complain about depression, bad memory, cramps, muscle pains, liver damage, sexual problems, etc.
Total cholesterol is not important as cardiovascular risk, what you have to keep an eye on are: triglycerides, under 100 and HDL cholesterol should be over 60.
You can get higher LDL from taking too many carbohydrates, which raise your bad cholesterol and triglycerides, and drop you good HDL cholesterol. The liver converts all those carbohydrates into triglycerides which maybe the beginning of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes
Foods from animal origin do contain cholesterol but they raise total and HDL cholesterol and lower triglycerides, so the net effect is healthful.
Your diet should be low, very low in grains and grain oils (all those oils that say ZERO cholesterol raise LDL cholesterol, the bad guy). NO starches, especially from wheat and maize, no sugars of any kind.
Your other tools against cardiovascular risk are: 30 minutes of exercise every day at a medium –high level, hopefully of high intensity intervals. It only takes 15 minutes to do 8 30 sec. intervals with 90 seconds of recuperation in between. Alternate days of this with weights to avoid losing muscle with age (we start to lose muscle at 30 years, women do NOT get big muscles regardless of the weights, they need testosterone injections to get them). These exercises will keep your triglycerides down and your HDL cholesterol above 60. You will be full of energy and desire to live.
Your other tool is fish oil. It also keeps your triglycerides down and your HDL cholesterol up. Take 3.000 mg per day of fish oil, equivalent to 900 mg of omega 3 fats (EPA plus DHA on the label) .
Please, read Fish Oil for Cholesterol and Fish Oil and triglycerides
Oh, and I forgot to mention that you will lose pounds following the above information. Please, let me know your feedback.
Best wishes,
Alfredo E.

High LDL Cholesterol Phobia
by Jonathan
(Israel)
Hi. My LDL cholesterol levels have doubled in the last 5 years. On 2004 I had 69mg and now I have 104mg. Doctors still say it is normal - however, how do I bring it down back to 69?
Jonathan F. 29 / M / Haifa, Israel
Answer.
Hi Jonathan. There is a widespread sentiment of phobia against cholesterol due to many years of biased information coming from cholesterol lowering producers and their arsenal of paid doctors.
If you had 68 LDL cholesterol a few years back is an indication that your total cholesterol may have been under 150. In fact a low cholesterol is an indication of poor health. 50% of the people that have a heart attack have normal cholesterol, that is below 200. Cholesterol is in fact an indication of good health since cholesterol is the vehicle that circulates hormones in the body and is the raw material for every cell in the organism.
What is important for heart disease are VLDL, HDL and triglycerides. These are the markers of heart disease risks, not LDL cholesterol. You should have a low VLDL, a high HDL (above 60) and low triglycerides (below 100, not 150 as many say)
So, you actually may be in better health today with a 104 LDL reading than before, it all depends on your other markers.
Please read more at Fish oil for cholesterol
Best wishes, Alfredo E. ------------------------------------------------------------------ One Essential nutrient may be completely missing from our diets today, omega 3 fats. Omega 3 fats are essential for our hearts, minds and entire body. In fact, every cell of our organism needs omega 3 to work at its prime.
For the last 30 years, hundreds of clinical studies have documented the benefits of omega 3 fish oil. Even the conservative American Heart Association (AHA) recommends it for people with risks of cardiovascular disease.
The situation is that it is difficult to get the proper amounts of fish oil without risking dangerous contamination, if you want to take it from your diet.
As an answer to that need, we offer molecularly distilled fish oil that comes from deep water fish, Hoki, a deep sea fish naturally high in DHA and unique to New Zealand. The oil is refined through extensive molecular distillation processes to remove any form of contamination. Click here to learn more .

Cholesterol and triglycerides After 3 Months of Drugs
by Patricia
Hello, I don’t understand, my triglycerides were 342, 3 months ago. After 3 months of taking a drug to lower triglycerides and cholesterol and losing 16 lbs with a little exercise, I lowered it down to 168 but my LDL cholesterol went up from 50 to 102 and my HDL cholesterol went up from 33 to 39. Total cholesterol went up from151 to 175.
Is normal?
Thanks for your opinion.
Patricia
Answer:
Hi Patricia. I don´t see why you are complaining, you got what you were looking for, your triglycerides are down to half of what they were before and your cholesterol is within normal ranges……. Probably the numbers are not exactly what you expected but you understand that this is not rocket science, everybody is different.
On the other side, I would recommend you don´t take drugs to lower triglycerides or to get a better cholesterol profile. You can change the numbers just by changing your eating and exercise habits, and by adding fish oil supplements.
You would have to lower or eliminate processed foods like starches (they become triglycerides in your liver), eat more natural foods like fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs and butter.
Exercise will lower your triglycerides and keep your body weight under control, and fish oil will raise HDL cholesterol and lower triglycerides. Start with 6.000 mg of fish oil everyday for a month, check your levels after 30 days and adjust accordingly.
Please, read Fish oil and triglycerides
Best wishes.

Roll of Omega 3 In Heart Disease
by Ralph
(USA)
Hi. What is the roll of omega 3 in heart disease? Why is important to have a high omega 3 diet? Is that a fad or real scientific information?
Thanks.
Answers:
The conservative AHA (American Heart Association) recommends taking 900 mgr daily of omega 3 fatty acids. That is equivalent to about 3 grams of fish oil per day (normally, 180 mg of EPA and 120 mg of DHA/ capsule).
Reasons Why Fish Oil is Essential for our Hearts:
1-The triglycerides go down, as much as 30-50%, subject to the amount of fish oil taken. 2-Blood clots are less prone to form, anti platelet aggregation, blood is less sticky. Blood pressure drops slightly. 3-Improves circulation to all parts of the body. Specially important as we age. Heart beat is more stable, less prone to arrhythmias, sudden cardiac arrhythmia(death) is reduced a much as 50%. 4-Inflammation, a marker of aging, is reduced in all the circulatory system, making the endothelium (the inner layer of the arteries) less inflammated, less prone to injuries and obstructions, that is, less heart attacks, less strokes. 5-Rises HDL Cholesterol (Good cholesterol). One of the 2 main markers of heart disease.
My recommendation is if you are thin and in excellent health take 3 grams per day. If you are overweight, have high blood pressure, high triglycerides or diabetes, take at least 6 grams initially.
My Best to you,
Alfredo E.

Fish Oil, High Cholesterol And Triglycerides
by Firas Alam
(United Arab Emirates)
Fish oil with proper exercise and diet
Hello. Last year and because of my work in an offshore facility, I had an increase in cholesterol and Triglycerides because of my food diet and almost doing no sport. The level of cholesterol was 400 triglycerides 365
Now I am following my exercises again and my food is based on slades, eggs, salmon steaks and sardines/tuna and I am taking 3 pills a day of fish oil EPA 180/ DHA 120 1000 Mg each pill.
My question: how long it will take me to go to the normal cholesterol level same as triglycerides level knowing that I am doing sports daily?
Thanks.
Answer.
Firas, there is not an exact rule to tell you how long it would take to get back to your normal cholesterol and triglycerides levels. It depends on several things. First, if you are overweight, which usually accompanies high cholesterol and triglycerides (signs of chronic inflammation, the real issue here), it will take you longer than if you are at your ideal weight.
Second, if your actual diet has no sugars and starches (carbohydrates from grains that your liver transform in triglycerides), it will take you less time to be back to normal level. And third, it also depends on the amounts of omega 3 you ingest. For your case, I would say, you should take 6.000 mg per day of fish oil to help you get your triglycerides and cholesterol back on track faster. After a month with this changes , take a blood analysis and see if you have to keep your dosage.
By the way, the 2 most important cardiovascular risk indicators are triglycerides (should be under 100, not under 150 as some say) and HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol, it should be above 60, not 40 as some say). If you have this 2 heart risks under control you can forget about TOTAL cholesterol, it does not say much.
The diet we recommend here is a diet free of sugars, starches and “bad” fats, with lots of fruits , vegetables, proteins, eggs, and dairy. Read more at Omega 3 And Weight Loss and Omega 3 Diet
Firas, let us know the results of your habits changes.

Lower Cholesterol and Triglycerides Without Pills
by Mary
How can I lower Cholesterol and Triglycerides with just a nice diet?? I want to lower my cholesterol without resorting to pills, herbs, etc. I don’t want any pills at all, not even fish oil. What are good cholesterol lowering foods?
Thanks.
Answer:
I don´t want to push fish oil capsules with you. You can actually lower cholesterol and triglycerides without fish oil, but you will get faster and better results with some omega 3. I leave it up to you. In the meanwhile there are two ways to do this:
Traditional way. Use a high fiber, no sugar, low fat, high protein diet. You will have to add 5 hours a week of exercise, probably brisk walking. In addition, take lower cholesterol foods and foods that are cholesterol free. Eating lots of vegetables and exercising is important.
If you are able to lower your weight this way, very probable that your cholesterol and triglycerides will get down in the same proportion.
New Way. The important factors here are not total cholesterol as such but to have a higher than 60 HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) and a lower than 100 triglycerides. If you have these 2 markers under control your chances of heart disease are minimal.
Besides, total cholesterol is bad indicator of many things, it dependents on heredity, foods you take and, on top of that, more than half of the people that die of a heart attack have normal cholesterol.
The way to achieve that is with a diet very low in carbohydrates, less than 100 mg per day, high in protein and “good fats” (butter, coconut oil, no gain oils, omega 3 oils, no omega 6 oils). All that supplemented with 15-20 minutes a day of sprints or high intensity intervals exercise.
This type of exercise raises HDL cholesterol and lowers triglycerides fast. You also lower your weight faster than with long slow exercise. For more read Eating the Omega 3 Way and Ideas For a Healthy Diet
Good luck,
Alfredo E.

Lab Results High Triglycerides and Total Cholesterol
by Donald
(NZ)
High cholesterol and triglycerides
Hi: I recently went to the doctor and to my surprise lab results did not came back as expected. I thought I was in perfect good health and only 32 years old. Serum triglycerides 340 and total cholesterol 255. I understand these results are high.
What do you think I should do?
Thanks Donald.
Answer:
Hi Zavid: Most doctors will tell you that since your triglycerides and total cholesterol are too high you have to take drugs to lower both, or else. …Don’t do it. They have been brain washed by decades of lies from drug companies.
If you don’t believe it, just do a search in Google “STATINS SIDE EFFECTS”. You will see hundreds of pages written from patients complaining from depression, muscle pain, lack of sexual desire, etc. That is the way these drug work, they are good at lowering cholesterol and triglycerides but terrible for your health.
Instead, I invite you to take responsibility of your health. Your triglycerides should be under 100 ( not 150 as some would want you to believe) and your total cholesterol is not important. What really matters is that your HDL cholesterol, good cholesterol, be ABOVE 60. That is all, and you can forget about big pharma since you can change these numbers yourself, without any drugs.
Just have to take control of your health.
It is simple, not easy, with these 3 steps:
1-Eliminate starches from your diet. Carbohydrates are converted by the liver into triglycerides. If you forget about grains your health will improve immediately. Not easy but simple. 2- Exercise 30 minutes a day at a medium high intensity (heavy breathing). Exercise rises your HDL and lowers your triglycerides but it will give you much more, joy of living. That matters to everybody. 3- Take 6.000 mgs a day of fish oil (close to 900 mg of omega 3 fatty acids, EPA plus DHA) It lowers your triglycerides and increases your HDL cholesterol. You will also benefit from the more than 50 other reasons to take omega 3

Good luck,

Statins, Total Cholesterol And Omega 3
by Aaron
(USA)
When do I need meds for high cholesterol? I am at 272 for the bad kind. I am supposed to have 138-199. My diet is very similar to my wife's who has perfect cholesterol
Thanks
Answer:
To sum up a VERY LONG discussion, I would say. You should never take statins to reduce your cholesterol. These drugs are very good at lowering cholesterol and triglycerides but are very bad for your body and your pocket. The pharmaceutical drug producers have sold the medical establishment on their need by doing some dirty tricks and twisting some statistics.
Your total cholesterol is an irrelevant number when talking about heart disease risk. What really matters are VLDL, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. All these numbers depend on or respond to the ingestion of carbohydrates. That is why if you take a low carbohydrate diet all of your cardiac risks will go down.
Carbohydrates will do this to your health:
1) Increase triglycerides and very low-density lipoprotein particles (VLDL) 2) Triglyceride-rich VLDL interact with LDL particles, making them smaller. (A process mediated by several enzymes, such as cholesteryl-ester transfer protein.) 3) Smaller LDL particles are more oxidizable--Oxidized LDL particles are the sort that are taken up by inflammatory white blood cells residing in the artery wall and atherosclerotic plaque. 4) Smaller LDL particles are more glycatable--Glycation of LDL is an important phenomenon that makes the LDL particle more atherogenic (plaque-causing). Glycated LDLs are not recognized by the LDL receptor, causing them to persist in the bloodstream longer than non-glcyated LDL. Glycated LDL is therefore taken up by inflammatory white blood cells in plaque.
Of course, carbohydrates also make you fat.
You can start by eliminating grains like wheat, maize, sugars and grain oils. If this step does not bring your HDL cholesterol above 60 and your triglycerides below 100, you need to take further steps like: exercise 30 minutes every day at a high level, take 6.000 mg of fish oil per day.
You may have to go on a Very Low carbohydrate diet if you do not lower your cardiovascular risks.

Best wishes
