Hi. I've never been able to digest omega-3/fish oils in any form or dose: capsule (frozen,) liquid, flax seed, etc. without significant digestive distress. Subsequently, I've tried to obtain from whole food sources: salmon, sardines, walnuts.
Recently, I've developed the same symptoms from even these sources. I will try your suggestions above (Vitamin D.)
Why can't I digest Omega-3 in any form? Is there some enzyme I'm missing in my system?
Answer:
I doubt you can’t digest any form of omega 3…… Yes, you are right, some people are very sensitive to omega 3 and may take a while to their digestion to get used to it. Have you taken it at different times of the day (even before bed time?), before and after diner, different labels, etc?
What I have found is that the more omega 6 you have in your normal diet you will need more time to get used.
Try reducing the ingestion of all grains and grain oils, sugars and all kinds of starches, they are all omega 6. Omega 6 fats use the same digestive enzymes that omega 3, they compete for the same enzymes.
Last, have you tried krill oil? I am sure you could have better results with it.
Best wishes.

Can't Digest Any Form of Omega 3 Fats
Thanks so much for your speedy response and suggestions. I have tried many ways of taking omega-3: different times of day, before/ after and even during meals, different brands, as capsules, liquids, frozen.) It's the recent sensitivity to actual foods with omega-3 that has me concerned.
Eating less omega-6 foods is an interesting idea. That will need to be a step at a time. I will check out the krill oil.
I will write as I see what happens. Looking forward to hearing more.
Question: Are whole grains (brown rice) ok?
Answer:
Eating less omega 6, or avoiding all grains and grain oils is important to improve your overall health. It does not matter if they are processed or whole grains. It will allow the assimilation of more omega 3, will make your blood sugar more stable, will aid in weight control, will keep your cardiovascular markers at better levels, will improve digestion, will give you a more powerful immune system.
Grains contain, besides being high in sugar, some substances called anti nutrients, responsible for many of the side effects grains have in human health. Anti nutrients are the weapons grain have to defend themselves from insects that also have toxic effect in humans. Try to eliminate them for 2 or 3 weeks and see how your health improves. Do not forget to also take sugar out of your diet, it is one of the main offenders. Let me know your results.
