What is Bipolar Disorder? Also know as maniac-depressive illness, it is a brain disorder that produces sudden changes in mood, energy and the ability to cope with daily life.
These mood swings are usually big enough to interfere with normal life. They are not as the mood changes normal people experience. They are so severe that make the patient look incapable of normal behavior. Some days the bipolar patient is so depressed that he is not able to get out of bed. Impossible to go to work. Other days, he is so full of energy and creativity that there appears to be no limit. The behavior could result in broken social relationships, poor school or work results, and even suicide. Nevertheless, bipolar disorder can be effectively treated and the patient can lead a normal productive life.
What Causes Bipolar Disorder?. No exact cause has been established for bipolar disorder. It appears to have multiple causes, including heredity and brain structural changes. Certain stress situations can trigger the first maniac or depressive episode. For example, the death of a close person, the loss of a job or any major event could start the bipolar disorder. Once it appears for the first time, it can happen in many situations, establishing the maniac-depressive cycle, typical of the bipolar disorder. It usually happens in adolescence for the first time. Even some people have the first symptoms in infancy, others only develop it late in life. Similar to many illnesses, like heart disease or diabetes, bipolar disorder should be carefully attended during the life of the person.
Bipolar Disorder Statistics.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in USA, close to 6 million north americans adults suffer from this disorder, equivalent to 2.6% of the adult population.More Statistics: - The average age for the first episode is 25 years.
- A good number of poets, some say that close to 20%, have maniac-depressive illness.
- The mortality rate for non treated bipolar disorder is higher that for heart disease and some types of cancer. So, it is critical to pay attention.
- 20 to 30% of the patients report having the first episode before 20 years, and 59% during infancy or before adolescence.
- Bipolar kids have a higher suicidal risk, substance abuse and academic failure.
Studies Relating Fish Oil and Bipolar Disorder. This is how the link between fish oil and bipolar disorder appear for the first time. After years of trying all kinds of chemical and toxic substances, in 1.999 the possibility to use a natural substance appeared. A Harvard University study showed the possibility to use fish oil, a natural product, friendlier to humans that those other compounds.
The Harvard Study Linking Fish oil and Bipolar Disorder.
In 1.999, 30 patients with bipolar disorder were divided in 2 groups, one given 9.6 daily grams of fish oil and the other a placebo. The study had been planned for 9 months but was suspended after 4 months due to the extraordinary results the fish oil group was having. After the first 2 months half of the patients in the placebo group had dropped out, compared with only 2 patients in the fish oil group. At the present moment a new study is under way with a bigger number of patients and for a longer period of time. Dr. Stoll suggests taking vitamin C and E along with the fish oil in order to avoid oxidation in the body. He also warns against the use of cod liver oil, that also has a high omega 3 content, because of the possibility of overdosing with vitamin A and D, at the high dosages used in the study. It was established that the high mood stabilizing qualities of fish oil did not had any of the side effects of the chemicals traditionally used(for example, lithium), such as: less cognitive capacity, weight gain, tremors, acne and kidney problems. Patients that appeared “incurable” were capable of normal and productive lives. This study showed promising results not only for people with bipolar disorder but with depression. Australian Study Relating Depression, Fish Oil and Bipolar Disorder. In June 2.006 a new Sidney study showed relationship between depression, fish oil and bipolar. People with low omega 3 fatty acids content in their blood were prone to have depression and/or bipolar disorder. Dr Gordon Parker declares that his work allow him to say that fish oil supplements can effectively be used with anti depressives.
Conclusions about Fish Oil and Bipolar Disorder .
We can say that there is a clear relationship between bipolar and omega 3 because:
- There is evidence that the omega 3 fatty acids produce results in bipolar disorder.
- The dosage to be taken is not clear. Some say that a high omega 3 dosage should not be used while others say it is necessary this type of supply, in order to get better results.
I personally believe that the ideal omega 3 dosage varies with the omega 6 consumption. We know that a high omega 6 diet, like the normal western diet, goes against the complete assimilation of omega 3. They both compete for the same enzymes. This is why omega 3 dosage should begin low, for example 3 grams per day and increase it if results are not as expected. It is a good idea that at the same time you limit the omega 6 ingestion. and The Dieting
- Even at high dosages there is practically no risk but some additional benefits like cholesterol control, arthritis, etc. For more read my page
Fish Oil Benefits.
- It is not very clear how long should be waited to get the benefits regarding fish oil and bipolar disorder. Nevertheless, at low omega 3 dosages wait at least 2 months.
It is important to note that if omega 3 mood stabilizing properties have been proved, it does not mean that fish oil can be a cure for bipolar disorder. Some times it can reduce the effects of the illness to make normal life possible. Some other times, used with chemicals it can bring good results. Click here to learn more about Fish Oil Benefits. Do you know why Omega 3 with DHA is so good for you? Most people don’t - and as a result they do not enjoy the level of vibrant health that they should! Instead they suffer from avoidable ailments such as heart disease. Even worse, many people as they get older, gradually ‘lose’ their mind and live out their twilight years not even recognizing their friends or family. Scientists throughout the world believe a great deal of the suffering caused from these diseases could be avoided by adequate intake of an essential Omega 3 fatty acid found in fish oil called DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) You may want to read this information.
