Allergic to Fish Oil

by Noreen
(Wallingford, VT USA)

When I took omega 3 pills I broke out in a rash. I put some rose oil on my face and broke out in a rash. Doctor said stay away from fish oils. How do I get omega 3?

Thanks.

Answer:
Noreen. There are several ways to get omega 3 fats into your diet. Fish oil, cod liver oil, krill oil, omega 3 from vegetable origin, like flaxseeds oil or chia, or to follow a high omega 3 diet (called Paleolithic diet, read Omega 3 Diet).

The easiest way to incorporate omega 3 is just to take some fish oil( or any of the other from animal origin) and to continue with your normal western diet. The optimal way would be to follow the Paleolithic diet, the same our ancestor followed for millions of years, but this requires more changes in the way you eat.

Since omega 3 is an essential fat, you still need it to stay healthy, even if you have an allergy. You could try a better quality of fish oil, molecularly distilled, like the one we sell here, because you could be reacting to some trace impurities in your fish oil. I would not recommend take the vegetable origin omega 3 oil since it is not fully bio available but still it is better than nothing.

Best wishes,

Alfredo E.

Fish Oil With Allergy to Seafood

Omega 3 with allergy to sea food

Omega 3 with allergy to sea food

Can I take Fish Oil supplements if allergic to seafood?

Thanks.

Answer:

Hi. Yes you could be allergic to sea food and not to fish oil or krill oil. It depends on the quality of the product you buy. If it is molecularly distilled, like the one we offer in this site, you may not be allergic to it.

I suggest you buy a molecularly distilled fish oil and see your reaction to small portion of it. If that brand does not work well, try some other brand. The few impurities it may have could produce some reaction

If you want to chose from different brands of krill oil, please go to Buy Krill Oil

Iodine Allergy and Fish Oil

by Linda
(Euless)

I'm 62 years old and have had three test with IV Dye, which I had a severe reaction on the last one. Docs told me then not to do IV Dye, it could kill me. Throat swells.

Then about 10 years ago I got to craving Shrimp and Lobster, so I ate a lot of it and next day I had edema so bad I had to go to my doctor. He thought I was having severe Heart issues, but I told him to just give me an allergy shot and it will go away. Sure enough , it went away.

My question is if I take one half teaspoon of a really good grade of Fish Oil, would it have the same effect on me after a few weeks. Would love to have an answer as my Natural Dr wants me to take it.

Thanks.

Answer:

Hi Linda. There are several omega 3 types of oils, fish, cod liver, krill and from vegetal origin (mainly flaxseeds). The omega 3 from animal origin is a more bio available oil than the one from vegetable origin (it has to be converted from a fatty acid called ALA to EPA and DHA).

I would recommend you avoid krill oil and start using a good molecularly distilled fish oil (like the one we sell here). Take one capsule per day initially until you are sure there is no reaction, then you can increase the amount to 2 or 3 per day. If that does not do it, you can always use the flaxseeds oil.

All the best,

Alfredo E.

--------------------------------------------------
One Essential nutrient may be completely missing from our diets today, omega 3 fats. Omega 3 fats are essential for our hearts, minds and entire body. In fact, every cell of our organism needs omega 3 to work at its prime.

For the last 30 years, hundreds of clinical studies have documented the benefits of omega 3 fish oil. Even the conservative American Heart Association (AHA) recommends it for people with risks of cardiovascular disease.

The situation is that it is difficult to get the proper amounts of fish oil without risking dangerous contamination, if you want to take it from your diet.

As an answer to that need, we offer molecularly distilled fish oil that comes from deep water fish, Hoki, a deep sea fish naturally high in DHA and unique to New Zealand. The oil is refined through extensive molecular distillation processes to remove any form of contamination. Click here to learn more .

Reaction To Fish Oil

by Mary
(NJ)

reaction to fish oil

reaction to fish oil

Hi. I noticed that when I take Omega 3 Fish Oil capsule in the morning, my throat has a "closed" feeling later in the afternoon that can last a couple days (if I stop taking it). I'm not experiencing any allergic reactions, just that I can "feel" my throat when I swallow.

Should I stop taking the Fish Oil?

Thanks.

Answer:

Mary, fish oil has an essential fatty acid, omega 3, that is important for the proper operation of every cell in our organism. When we don´t take enough omega 3 in our diets ( modern diets have 20 to 50 times less omega 3 that what we need) our cells work different creating the environment for degenerative diseases to set in. Our brain cells, cardiovascular system, immune system, joints etc., need omega 3 to operate at their full potential.

I would recommend you try with different kinds of omega 3, fish oil, cod liver oil or krill oil. It could be the brand name you are using now, but it is important you get the benefits of fish oil.

If after trying different types of omega 3 you are still feeling the same, perhaps you should stop taking it.

Please, let us know how things develop.

Best wishes,

Alfredo E.

Rash and Pure EPA Fish Oil

by Sally
(UK)

Hi. Rash caused by fish oil? About a month ago I started taking Mind 1st PuraEPA as recommended by a friend for low mood. It has certainly helped my general mood, but I have come up with this awful itchy rash which has got worse and worse.

Antihistamines do not help, neither does steroid cream (although as someone who likes herbal remedies I did not stick with this for long). I have tried E45, Bio Oil, Sudacrem, Tea Tree and witch hazel cream and nothing cures it. It is driving me crazy, on my lower legs, tummy, arms, lower back, neck and getting worse.

Could this be the EPA or Borage Oil in the product which I thought was good for the skin!! If it is the fish oil at least I can stop taking it and see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks.

Answer:

Hello Sally:

I would say, you should stop taking all of these supplements until the rash clears completely. Once it is gone for one or two weeks, start adding one at the time. For example, start with the fish oil. If you get the rash again, switch to a different kind of fish oil (I would suggest you try our Fish oil with DHA, specially important in mood disorders).

I also would encourage you to start making 2 other changes that affect mood and feelings in many people: daily exercise and a diet free of grains and grain oils. These 2 changes have a rapid and profound impact in the mood of a person. Take them as habits and you will feel like new.

Metal Allergy With Omega 3

by Kelly
(Kelowna, BC)

When I take Omega 3 supplements, whether fish or flax seed, I develop a rash to metals. Any where my skin comes into contact with any metal it breaks out in an itchy red rash.

This is frustrating as I cannot wear any jewelry, including my gold wedding rings and special necklace chains. Once I stop taking the supplement, my tolerance for metal returns in about 8 weeks.

Do you have any explanation for this or suggestions of what I may try as I think I really need the Omega 3 supplementation but the rash is so annoying.

Thanks,

Answer:

I would suggest you try, molecularly distilled fish oil, cod liver oil and krill oil.

Best wishes,

Alfredo E.

Omega 3 Supplement (Nutrilite) and Rash

by Elliott
(New Mexico)

Hi.I developed swelling and a rash around my eyes. Is this a possible side effect of this fish oil supplement?

Thanks.

Answer:

Hello Elliot. Yes, it could be the fish oil you are taking. More than the fish oil itself, it could be the impurities found in that fish oil. I would suggest you stop taking it for a few days until the rash disappears. Then start with one capsule for a few days. If it does not show after 3 or 4 days, take 2 capsules for a few days and then take 3 capsules after that.

If you develop the rash, I suggest you buy a molecularly distilled fish oil, like the one we sell here. It has a very low level of impurities due to its special manufacturing process.

Best wishes,

Alfredo E.

Shell Fish Allergy and Fish Oil

by Christine

Shell fish allergy and omega 3

Shell fish allergy and omega 3

I have an allergy to Shell Fish and I wanted to take Omega 3 Fish Oil Pills, but wasn't sure if it was okay to take them because of my allergy.

I tried to do some research to find out, but have had no luck finding anything. Thanks for the help.

Christina

Answer:

Hi Christina. If you are allergic to shell fish does not necessarily means you are allergic to fish oil and to omega 3, the active ingredient in fish oil. The chemical compounds in shell fish that you are allergic to may not be in fish or in any of the other presentations of omega 3, like cod liver oil and krill oil.

Your best bet would be to try one capsule of good quality fish oil (molecularly distilled fish oil has the least impurities) for several days to see if the allergy come back.

If that does not work, you may try a different label of fish oil. Then you could use the cod liver oil that it is also omega 3 or the krill oil that has the best advantages.

Anyway, it is very important that you get all the benefits of omega 3, your overall health will improve and/or prevent future diseases.

Reaction to Cod Liver Oil

by Shelley
(St George UT)

Hi. I took Twinlab lemon flavored cod liver oil...after about a week of at least a tablespoon a day, I noticed painful red bumps on my legs from the knees down. At first I thought I had slept with a spider.

I got a fever of 102 and was down for 24 hours. The bumps lasted 4-5 days and a few popped up on my arms and nose. I waited a week and started the cod liver oil again...the bumps are coming back in the exact same places.

I'm pretty sure it's the oil...anyone else have this kind of symptom? Am I crazy to think it's an allergic reaction to the stuff?

THX Shelley

Answer:

I would be careful to take the same cod liver again. It could be an allergic reaction to some small component in that oil. I would recommend switching to a molecularly distilled cod liver oil or fish oil, that has almost zero contaminants.
